Slow start dooms CR baseball at Lassen
Apr 23, 2014 - 7:45:20 PM
College of the Redwoods gave up eight runs through the first three innings and never fully recovered — despite a six-run sixth inning —and fell to Lassen 10-7 on Wednesday in the first game of CR’s season-ending Golden Valley Conference baseball series in Susanville.
Wednesday’s game was the last of three make-up games for a previous rainout in Arcata.
The Corsairs have now made up all three games against Lassen, and will finish the 2014 season with their regularly scheduled doubleheader against the Cougars on Thursday at noon.
“We drove down before the game and unfortunately we kind of had a sense of it pre-game that the motivation wasn’t there,” said CR head coach Bob Brown. “It’s tough to make that trip, but it’s still no excuse for us to come out not ready to play. And that’s what happened. Lassen took advantage.”
The Cougars scored three runs in the first, one in the second and four more in the third for an 8-0 lead after three innings.
CR’s Ansel Cecil went 2-for-4 with an RBI, extending his hitting-streak to 19 games, while Brad Props was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Still trailing 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth (CR was the home team despite playing in Susanville). the Corsairs started the inning with six consecutive hits and plated six runs to cut the score to 8-6.
CR added a single run in the seventh to make it 8-7 and got the potential game-tying run in scoring position but failed to capitalize.
The Cougars added two insurance runs in the ninth shut the door for the win.
With the loss, the Corsairs fall to 8-15 in the GVC and 9-25 overall.
