CR Art Gallery presents 'Made in Humboldt'
The College of the Redwoods Art Gallery will kick off its Fall 2010 season with an exhibition highlighting the arts and crafts of our region. The works in the exhibition were selected from the home arts and fine arts displays at this year's Humboldt County Fair, and offer a unique cross-section of the creative practices at work here.
Present in the gallery is an eclectic mix of the handmade, with artistry and craftsmanship going into both quilts and canvases alike. The exhibition seeks to explore the often ambiguous distinction between art and craft, and the tools we use to value and appreciate each. Garth Johnson, a professor of art at CR and one of the curators, wrote in a essay for the exhibition that he is proud to live in a county where there is so much overlap between artists, crafters, folk artists, and hobbyists.
"Made in Humboldt" will run Sept. 1 through Sept. 30 with a special public reception to be held on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., in celebration of the creative traditions and innovations kept and made by those in our community.
The College of the Redwoods Art Gallery is located in the Creative Arts Complex on the Eureka Main Campus, via the North Entrance. For more information, gallery hours, or to make an appointment to see the exhibition, please phone the division office at 707-476-4558.
