The College of the Redwoods Board of Trustees approved a resolution by a 6-1 vote reducing the number of seats on the board from nine to eight at their July 8 meeting.

Trustee Rick Bennett from Gasquet in Del Norte County cast the dissenting vote. Trustee Tracy Coppini from Ferndale was absent.

Over the past year, the Board of Trustees has considered various options for reducing the number of trustee areas from the historical nine. CR of the Redwoods is the only community college district in California with nine trustees. The Option 5 map approved by the Board at its June meeting reduces the number of trustee areas from nine to eight.

The map also allows for a reduction to seven trustee areas, without reconfiguration, if, in the future, the Mendocino County portion of Redwoods Community College District (RCCD) is transferred to Mendocino College.

The final step in this process is for the Board of Governors (BOG) for California Community Colleges to ratify RCCD's change from nine to eight. Materials required to be submitted to the BOG include a copy of the new map, an official resolution of the Board and an explanation of the reasons for the change. These items will be submitted to the BOG for its inclusion in a future meeting.

A reduced number of trustees will decrease CR District expenditures for trustee stipends, trustee health benefits, trustee travel, trustee professional development, and trustee election-related expenses. As the college has been dealing with serious fiscal challenges over the past two years, reducing the number of trustees is just one of the actions the Board has taken to address the financial situation. The trustees have also eliminated their monthly stipends and are contributing to the cost of their health benefits.

No current CR Trustees will lose their seat as a result of this action. Former Trustee George Truett from southern Humboldt resigned late last year and he was not replaced on the board.
