As part of College of the Redwoods’ development of a new Fire Technology Degree Program, CR recently received a 1986 Sanford Fire Engine donated by the Suisun City Fire Department.

“The fire engine came with an assortment of fire hoses, nozzles and adaptors, as well as ladders, axes and pike poles,” said Ed Trigeiro, CR Fire Technology Coordinator. The engine was secured by Humboldt Fire District #1 Fire Chief Ken Woods with the cooperation of Suisun City Fire Chief Mike O’Brien.

CR’s Fire Technology Program is still being developed with the plan of starting in Fall 2010. Students will be able to study Fire Technology while working toward an associate of science degree.

“Once all curriculums have been approved by the College and the California Community College Chancellor’s Office, we will then work toward developing an accredited Firefighter I full-time academy,” Trigeiro said. “Firefighter I and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT I) certification has become the minimum standard when applying to most fire departments in the state of California.”

Trigeiro said CR’s goal is to offer an A.S. degree in Fire Technology, a Firefighter I Academy, Advanced Fire Officer and Chief Officer Training. Currently, all students need to travel out of the area to attend an accredited fire academy.
