The Boards of Trustees at both College of the Redwoods (CR) and Mendocino College this week separately approved an agreement reached between the two presidents of the institutions allowing Mendocino College to offer fall semester classes at CR’s Fort Bragg site.

The CR Trustees approved the agreement on a unanimous 7-0 vote at their Tuesday, July 8 meeting. The Mendocino College Trustees also voted 7-0 to accept the agreement at their July 9 meeting.

"The Mendocino-Lake Governing Board's decision to expand educational opportunities to the coast speaks to their willingness and commitment to serve all students'' said Mendocino College President Arturo Reyes. “Mendocino College is excited to form new partnerships with the coast communities and to provide exceptional, accessible and affordable educational opportunities to the area residents.

''The success of this partnership depends greatly on the enrollments that are realized as we offer classes at the CR Mendocino Coast Education Center. We anticipate strong demand for our course offerings this fall and, if all goes well, we look forward to a greater presence in the near future.''

''I’m pleased that the Board approved this agreement,'' said CR President Kathy Smith. ''It demonstrates their commitment to help serve the interests of the students and communities of the Mendocino Coast by working cooperatively with Mendocino College. This agreement is a positive move for both college districts and for the residents of the Mendocino Coast.''

Smith said that during the time of this agreement, which covers fall semester 2014, the two colleges will continue discussing the possibilities of a long-term memorandum of understanding for the continued delivery of services to the Coast communities for the next two to three years. Future conversations may include the potential transfer of College of the Redwoods’ Mendocino Coast territory and facilities from College of the Redwoods to Mendocino College.

Mendocino College will offer a variety of for-credit and non-credit classes, including those that will allow current students to continue toward completing the programs they began at CR.

A full listing of fall classes that will be offered by Mendocino College at the Mendocino Coast Education Center will be available soon on the Mendocino College website, www.mendocino.edu
