College of the Redwoods President Jeff Marsee was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to participate in a two-week seminar for American community college administrators at several colleges in Russia in April.

Marsee, who has been CR's president since July 2008, is one of six United States community college administrators selected to be a part of the seminar. "We will be exchanging ideas with our educational counterparts in Russia," Marsee said.

Participants will focus on the role of community colleges in higher education and the local community and exchange knowledge and best practices with Russian administrators in post-secondary education to lay the groundwork for institutional partnerships, faculty and student exchanges and internships. The overall objective is to strengthen the ability of U.S. and Russian institutions to prepare students for success in the global economy. During the program Americans will explain how the U.S. community college system develops educational programs that combine workforce training and civic education and prepares students for additional higher education. Americans will also familiarize themselves with Russian institutions, making site visits and meeting with senior administrators, government officials and community representatives.

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since its establishment in 1946, under legislation introduced by the late Sen. J. William Fulbright, the Fulbright Program has provided nearly 300,000 students, scholars and teachers with the opportunity to observe each other's political, economic, educational and cultural institutions to exchange ideas and embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world’s inhabitants.

"I consider it an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Russian Community College Administrators Seminar program." Marsee said.
