The road to the California state championships begins Thursday for the College of the Redwoods men’s and women’s cross country teams as the Corsairs travel to West Valley High School in Cottonwood for the Golden Valley Conference championships at 4 p.m.
The top two teams advance as a group, while individuals who finish in the top half of the race will advance to the Nor-Cal Championships next week at the Beal’s Point course at Folsom Lake near Sacramento.
The top runners at that race advance to the state finals at Woodward Park in Fresno Nov. 23, a course CR head coach Reed Elmore has taken one of his teams to three of his past four years as head coach.
“That’s our goal, to make it back to state,” Elmore said. “We’ve got some wildcards so anything could happen.”
The Corsairs, who competed on the West Valley course at the Jim Middleton Invitational back on Oct. 11, are well prepared for the upcoming meet.
Currently Butte College is ranked No. 8 in Northern California and will be a target for Redwoods on Thursday.
“We know what we have to do,” Elmore said. “On the women’s side, we’ve got some individuals that are doing better and will be looking to break up some of the Butte runners, while on the men’s side, we just have to hang on past the initial burst and try to move up on Butte and crack their top-five.”
CR’s Beatrice Caffe has been the top runner for the Corsairs this season and is expected to lead the pack again at the GVC championships, while for the men, Gabe Best has stepped up to fill that role following a knee injury to Kevin McTague, who was forced to miss the majority of the season.
“We’ve just been working hard, visualizing the race and getting our minds right,” Elmore said. “It’s going to be a challenge but I know we can do it.”
