College of the Redwoods, Santa Rosa JC, San Jose City College and Shasta will all look to “Beat the Heat” on Saturday as the Corsairs host their season-opening cross-country meet, starting at 10 a.m. on the main Eureka campus.
The course, which will be 5-kilometers for the women and 4-miles for the men, will run throughout the CR campus, providing, according to CR’s fifth-year head coach Reed Elmore, a complete cross-country experience.
“It’s a true cross-country course,” Elmore said. “There are hills, flats and trails, it’s a challenging course but we still tried to make it as fast as possible.”
The meet, which began as a high school event hosted by Elmore and the Corsairs, slowly began to catch on collegiately, giving out-of-area teams a chance to compete in a cooler climate before competition officially begins next week.
“We kind of wanted to set up a preseason meet that was low-key and low-cost,” Elmore said. “One of the teams will be camping and doing some team bonding, and it’s just a great opportunity for some of these teams to get out of the heat and compete on a unique course.”
Redwoods will compete in its official season-opener Sept. 21 at the Northwest Classic in Eugene, Ore.
