College of the Redwoods continues to build momentum for a run at the cross-country state championships as the Corsairs had another strong showing at the Jim Middleton Invitational at Shasta College on Friday.
The men’s team had two runners place in the top-10 on the 4-mile course as Ismael Lopez came in seventh with a time of 24 minutes, 25 seconds, while Liam Burns finished just behind him in ninth (24:39).
“The guys’ team is really shaping up to be a contender in conference and maybe state,” said CR head coach Reed Elmore. “We’ve still got a lot of work in front of us, but things are really coming together.”
On the women’s side, CR’s Beatrice Caffe led the Corsairs for a second consecutive week, finishing 12th with a time of 23:12 on the 3-mile course, while Dani Reves placed 17th with a time of 26:52 in her first college race.
“Beatrice is really doing well for us,” Elmore said. “And Dani hasn’t even been running two months and she was able to put up a nice time, she’s got some talent.”
Redwoods will compete next at the Pat Ryan Invitational at Santa Rosa Junior College on Friday.
