The College of the Redwoods Del Norte campus will host 279 4th grade students for a morning of educational activities promoting college attendance on May 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The program "I'm Going to College," combines classroom activities throughout the year and culminates with youngsters experiencing a day in the life of a college student. While on campus, the 4th graders will attend college mini-classes especially designed for the 4th grade learners. They will also hear about the advantages of a college education, financial assistance for the costs of college and the importance of doing well in their elementary classes.

The purpose of I'm Going to College is to expose students to college at an early age. Many local students and their families do not know that college is possible. Planting the seeds for education can never come too early. By having a first-hand experience while in elementary school, students visualize college in their future.

The I'm Going to College program was developed in 1990 by a group of financial aid administrators to increase the number of students that continued on to college.

California Student Opportunity and Access programs (CalSOAP) throughout the state sponsor I'm Going to College for thousands of 4th graders. Northcoast CalSOAP is funded by the California Student Aid Commission/EdFund, the state's largest provider of financial aid to college students. In addition to College of the Redwoods' CalSOAP program, this year's event is also sponsored by the Building Healthy Communities Initiative.
