College of the Redwoods freshman Johnny Shelton scored a season-high 28 points, hitting three 3-pointers and leading the men’s basketball team to its highest scoring game of the year in a 108-103 Golden Valley Conference win at Feather River on Saturday.
For the second straight game, the Corsairs had five players finish in double figures as Mitchell Hash tied his season-high with 22, while James Slade had 19, Justin Heidrick finished with 18 and Jon Losa scored 16.
“It was a track meet,” said CR head coach Justin Mora. “Both teams got up and down and it seemed like neither team could stop each other.”
Redwoods took a seven-point lead into halftime, leading 51-44, but the Golden Eagles caught fire behind the arc in the second half and came charging back to take the lead.
Down the stretch, however, Redwoods was able to get some clutch baskets and free throws to seal the win.
“We made stops and then made our free throws to end it,” Mora said.
With the win, the Corsairs improve to 5-3 in the GVC and 15-9 overall and still sit on the bubble for a potential postseason berth.
“I told the guys we just need to win our last two games and that’s all we can do,” Mora said.
CR plays next at home against Siskiyous on Saturday at 4 p.m.
