The College of the Redwoods men's basketball team limited College of Marin to six points over the final six minutes and pulled away from the Mariners for a 71-56 victory in Kentfield on Sunday afternoon.
Coming off a season-opening win on Saturday, COM was a step slow defensively, coach Bruce Furuya said in explaining the outcome.
"It's on our team to realize that we're going to be playing back-to-back games," Furuya said. "We can't just play two halves and then rest the next night. ... It was bad defense. We broke down at the six-minute mark and didn't close out on the shooters the whole game. I think the excitement of the first game didn't translate into the second game."
Former Tam standout Mike Mitchell led the Mariners (1-1) with 11 points. Dom Brinson and Travis Tollner had 15 points apiece for Redwoods.
Redwoods next action will be at the Mendocino College "Eagle Invitational" on Thursday through Saturday.
