College of the Redwoods announced this week the hiring of John J.D. Davidson as the new head coach for the women’s soccer team.
CR, which has been without women’s soccer for the past two seasons due to low turnout, has turned to Davidson, a former Humboldt State Lumberjack who has been coaching in the Mad River Youth Soccer League since 2001, to help resurrect the program.
“There’s a lot of hard work in front of us, but we’re going to have a lot of fun doing it,” said Davidson, who attended high school and junior college in Southern California before joining the Jacks for two seasons in 1999 and 2000. “This first year is going to be a program rejuvenation and we hope to just build on it from there.”
Davidson graduated from Peninsula High School in 1994 before playing two seasons at El Camino Community College in Torrance.
After transferring to HSU in ’99 and playing for two seasons under Alan Exley, who has since coached both men’s and women’s soccer at CR, Davidson received his degree in Anthropology in 2001 and later joined the MRYSL as a coach.
Davidson received his USSF B coaching license in 2011, and recently took over the former Redwood Soccer Camps (which has been running since 1979), which is now called the Mad Skills Camp.
“It’s mostly just all about the fundamentals,” Davidson said of the camp. “We have a lot of focus on ball control and possession.”
To get the ball rolling for the rapidly approaching 2013 fall season, Davidson and CR will be offering a summer session soccer class open to all CSU, junior college and high school students.
The class will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m. at the main CR campus in Eureka.
“It’s going to be a great opportunity for some of the players in the area to come out and meet each other and hopefully get a jump on the fall season,” Davidson said. “We’re not only interested in the graduating seniors in high school right now, we’re also looking at the players who have been out of the game for a year or two who might be interested.”
