Butte College scored six goals in the second half to cruise past College of the Redwoods 8-0 on Friday in a Golden Valley Conference women’s soccer match in Eureka.
CR goalkeeper Elianna Bruns, who made close to 20 saves in the match, kept her team in the game in the first half, holding the Roadrunners to a 2-0 lead.
After the break, however, Butte made some adjustments and opened the offensive flood gates.
“We got burned on some plays in the second half, but we hung in there,” said CR head coach J.D. Davidson. “Overall I think our team is getting some traction and we’re not dwelling on our mistakes. We’re learning from them and getting better.”
Butte’s Cynthia Ramirez scored two of her game-high three goals in the second half as the Corsairs’ defense began to break down.
“I really thought Vonai (Willison) and Sara (Masnica) had a great game for us in the back,” Davidson said. “They do a lot of little things off the ball that don’t go into the stat books and I’ve been very impressed with their leadership.”
Coach Davidson also praised his goalie for her efforts.
“(Elianna) made a ton of great plays for us,” Davidson said. “Her angles to the ball and her courage to take the one-on-one matchup really stood out. She’s still got some things to work on, but she’s another great leader for us.”
With the loss, Redwoods drops to 0-1 in the GVC and 0-5 overall.
The Corsairs play Butte again next Friday in Chico.
