Feather River scored four goals in each half and picked up its ninth shutout of the season in women’s soccer action at College of the Redwoods on Tuesday, handing the Corsairs an 8-0 defeat in Golden Valley Conference play.
The Golden Eagles, who sit atop the GVC with a record of 5-0-1 (11-2-2 overall), have outscored their opponents 51-9 this season.
“It was a challenging game, both physically and mentally,” said CR head coach J.D. Davidson. “Obviously we’re going through some growing pains here, but the big thing for us is to continue supporting each other and having a big-picture view about development and getting better. It’s not going to happen overnight or after one week of practice. We know it’s all about consistency and pushing through.”
Despite finishing with the same final score as their previous meeting at Community Stadium Sept. 27, the Corsairs played stronger defensively the second time around, holding the Eagles scoreless for the opening seven minutes.
In the teams’ last meeting, Feather River took a 4-0 lead in the same time.
“It’s all about identifying problem areas and coming up with solutions and we’ve been able to do that,” Davidson said.
Once again the Corsairs were anchored defensively by goalkeeper Elianna Bruns and defender Sara Masnica.
“Sara has really picked up some slack and carried a lot of weight for us defensively because of injuries and things,” Davidson said. “She is a top-notch competitor. Her effort, her focus and concentration are all outstanding and she’s a real team leader.”
With the loss, Redwoods drops to 0-5 in the GVC and 0-6 overall.
The Corsairs play next at Butte on Friday at 11 a.m.
