College of the Redwoods scored back-to-back goals in the 75th and 76th minutes of a Golden Valley Conference women’s soccer match against Shasta in Eureka on Friday, but it wasn’t enough as the Corsairs fell 9-2.
Redwoods, which had been shut out in its previous seven GVC matches, finally broke the ice in the second half as Sara Masnica and Yadira Sanchez capitalized on a pair of opportunities in less than two minutes of play.
“We really wanted to score this game and the team was ecstatic,” said CR head coach J.D. Davidson. “Based on how the first half went we knew we just had to go for it and we did it.”
Shasta built a 6-0 lead in the first half, but the Corsairs didn’t back down, playing the Knights to a 3-2 second half.
“It just shows what it feels like when you prepare and work hard and go out there and do the best you can, regardless of the score, you can come off the field feeling like a winner,” Davidson said.
CR got strong defensive play once again from midfielder Bernadette Smith, while Masnica also helped lead the team.
“Sara has been working very hard, she deserved her goal,” Davidson said. “And (Smith) has been a big addition for us. She’s a ball-winner and good ball defender and the last two games she’s really come out with the right attitude and it’s shown on the field.”
With the loss, Redwoods drops to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the GVC.
The Corsairs play two road matches next week at Lassen on Tuesday and Feather River on Friday.
