A POWER SURGE: CR softball team looks to finish season strong
Apr 11, 2014 - 9:59:08 AM
The bats of the College of the Redwoods softball team came alive last week.
The Corsairs pounded out 48 hits in four games against Lassen and Feather River and scored 37 runs.
Although CR split the two doubleheaders, largely as a result of lackluster defensive play, the Corsairs will look to keep their momentum going this week as CR hosts Butte in a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
Currently there is a three-way tie for second place in the GVC with Butte, Siskiyous and Lassen all knotted up at 8-8.
CR can play spoiler for two of those teams as we head down the stretch for the final two weeks of conference play. The Corsairs host Siskiyous next Friday.
“We have a chance to screw some things up for some teams, which is fun,” said CR head coach Maggie White. “I really feel like our team had a breakthrough last week and I’m looking forward to seeing how we carry it over.”
For the first time inside GVC play last week, the Corsairs won the second game of a doubleheader, beating Feather River 13-4 in five innings on Sunday.
The Corsairs, after losing the opener despite taking a 5-1 lead early, CR showed some resolve in the nightcap, overcoming a 3-0 first-inning deficit for the convincing victory.
Coach White is hoping the mental toughness her team showed in that game can be a learning point.
“We came together and played as a team, and played to win,” White said. “We showed that we have the potential. We just need to bring that same attitude each time out.”
Fueling the Corsairs confidence last week was their two and three hitters in the lineup, freshmen Chelsea Pettett and Mackenzie Burgess, respectively, who went a combined 18-for-31 (.580) in the four games, with eight doubles, a triple and 15 RBIs.
“They’re really seeing the ball well right now,” White said.
CR has also gotten outstanding pitching from sophomore starter Tammy Valley, who has 95 strikeouts in 102 innings and will start Saturday’s opener.
