Playing in its fifth and sixth games in three days at Sierra College on Saturday, the College of the Redwoods softball team battled, but came up empty in non-conference action, falling to Sierra 8-0 and Ohlone 11-7.
The Corsairs had just one hit in the opener as sophomore Elise Culbertson broke up the no-hitter in the top of the sixth inning.
In the nightcap, trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the third, CR plated four runs in the frame on three hits to tie the score 7-7.
CR’s Morgan Psalmonds (2-for-4) and Sierra Earley each hit doubles in the game and Tammy Valley went 2-for-3 with two singles, but the Corsairs failed to score again after the third inning.
“I was really proud of the way we battled against Ohlone because it was our sixth game in three days and they’re a good ball club,” said CR head coach Maggie White. “We came back and tied the game after being down again, which showed some toughness.”
Valley got the loss in the circle in the opener, striking out six and walking four in seven innings, and took the loss in the nightcap as well after coming on in relief of starter Chelsea Pettett in the top of the fourth inning with the score tied 7-7.
“Tammy threw well again today but I think we were all a little bit tired,” White said. “We played some pretty good teams this week which I think will be good for us later on down the road.”
Over the six-game, three-day roadtrip, Pettett finished 9-for-18 at the plate with three doubles and a two-run home run.
“I just feel like I’m locked in right now so I’m just trying not to change anything,” Pettett said.
With the losses, the Corsairs drop to 1-8 on the year and will play next in back-to-back doubleheaders on the road again next week at Napa Valley and De Anza on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
