It may have taken extra innings, but the College of the Redwoods softball team got the proverbial monkey off its back with a 5-4 win in eight innings in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader against Mendocino in Ukiah on Thursday.
The Corsairs fell 5-1 in the opener, but actually out-hit Mendocino 6-2 in the game.
“It’s always nice to get that first win,” said CR head coach Maggie White, whose Corsairs had dropped their first six games to open the season. “Once you get the first it becomes easier to get the second, but, before that, the pressure starts to build and it gets harder and harder.”
CR pitcher Tammy Valley threw a total of nine innings in the two games combined (six in the first game and three in the second), striking out 18 batters and allowing just three hits.
In the nightcap, she picked up her first win of the season after coming on in relief in the fifth inning with a 4-4 tie.
“Tammy was dominant for us today,” White said. “She’s a strong pitcher and she’s going to have a great year for us if she can keep it up.”
In the top of the eighth, with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, where a runner is automatically placed at second base, CR got a huge clutch single from leadoff batter Morgan Psalmonds, who finished the nightcap 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, to give CR the go-ahead run.
Then Valley slammed the door in the bottom of the frame.
“Mo gave us the big hit we needed,” White said. “With two outs and the game on the line, she gave us the clutch hit at the right time and our team needed to experience that.”
CR’s Chelsea Pettett went 5-for-7 in the two games combined with two doubles and two runs scored.
After the split, the Corsairs stand at 1-6 on the year and will play next in a doubleheader at American River on Friday, starting at 10 a.m.
