The Roadrunners brought their running shoes.
Butte College was a runaway locomotive and the College of the Redwoods softball team was standing on the tracks Saturday in a Golden Valley Conference doubleheader.
Butte’s 20-run rally in the top of the third inning off of 17 hits sealed the deal in game one for a 21-2 victory, and Butte starting pitcher Jessica Salsbury threw a six-inning complete-game no-hitter in the nightcap as the Corsairs fell 8-0.
It was the third time in its four-game GVC series against Butte the Corsairs were shut out at the plate.
“Give Butte a ton of credit, they pitched well against us,” said CR head coach Maggie White. “They hit well, they pitched well, they were better than us in all aspects of the game. It was pretty frustrating, the one bad inning is killing us.”
Bad inning is an understatement for what happened in game one.
Butte, which did not score in the first two innings, had its first 20 batters reach base and come around to score in the top of the third inning as one after another the Roadrunners pounded out 17 hits, fueled by four defensive errors.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anything like it,” White said.
The roadrunners had scored 18 runs by the time CR recorded its first out.
The Corsairs mustered a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI single by Elise Culbertson, who finished the game 2-for-3, knocking in the only runs CR scored against Butte in four games.
In the nightcap, it was all about Salsbury, who retired the first 13 batters in order and had her perfect game ended with one out in the top of the fifth inning on an error, but was still able to complete the no-hitter.
“We just didn’t hit the ball like we can,” White said.
With the losses, the Corsairs fall to 4-14 in the GVC and 5-25 overall and will finish their 2014 campaign on Friday with a home doubleheader against Siskiyous at noon.
