College of the Redwoods freshman Kevin McTague took third overall in the NorCal Finals at De Anza College in Cupertino on Saturday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 53 seconds, but missed the A-Standard time by 3 seconds and will have to wait until Tuesday to see if he made the state finals.
CR’s Colton Ross took fifth overall in the pole vault, clearing 14-feet, 4-inches, and Nick Moran took eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.68 meters, but neither met the A-Standard in their event and did not qualify to move on.
“They may change the rules in the future but for now everyone is just chasing that A-Standard time and not competing with each other,” said CR head coach Reed Elmore. “But it was still a great day for us overall.”
McTague, who needed a time of 9:50 and a fourth-place overall finish to automatically qualify, missed a guaranteed trip to state by only three seconds.
“Right now he’s ranked 15th in the state and they take the top 12 so we just have to wait and see how it plays out,” Elmore said. “But everyone was right there at their season best so there wasn’t much else we could do. We just needed to pop big ones to move on, but it was a long season for everyone and I’m really proud of how far we came.
