The College of the Redwoods women's volleyball team opened the 2009 season with a loss on Monday.
Facing Umpqua Community College, the Lady Corsairs fell via scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-19.
But, with the season in its infancy, CR head coach Marla Gleave was encouraged with what she saw.
”I have seven new freshman, but, we did okay,” Gleave said, “We could have used more energy. I account that to first-match jitters.
”Overall, I was pretty pleased with consistency in some areas. The middle played well.”
Gleave went on to spotlight Marcy Renner and Bekah Kemp as the top-two players in the middle against Umpqua.
The lack of firepower on offense can be pinpointed on youth.
”Kristy Byrd, she's our new setter,” said Gleave. “We're getting her used to setting different sets and reading different blocks. It's going to take time.”
The Lady Corsairs will have plenty of time to work out the kinks before their Sept. 5 trip down to Ukiah for the Mendocino College Classic.
Slated for a 10 a.m. start, CR will face South West Oregon Community College, City College of San Francisco and host Mendocino.
