College of the Redwoods was overpowered in its Golden Valley Conference opener at home against Feather River on Friday, falling to the Golden Eagles in straight sets, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-19.
Feather River opened the first set with five consecutive kills on its first five attempts, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead.
“They’ve been the conference champions I think the past four years,” said CR head coach Marla Gleave. “Sarah (Ritchie) runs a real quality program. Their tempo was quicker than we saw in all of our preseason and their depth, from top to bottom, was impressive.”
Redwoods rallied from behind to take leads in both the second and third games, but the Golden Eagles responded in both sets, putting up points in bunches.
“We would be battling with them and then all of a sudden we would hit a stretch where we weren’t passing as well and they’d rattle off seven or eight points before we could get it fixed,” Gleave said. “But I’m still proud of the team and the way we competed. We never gave up.”
Trailing 24-11 in the third and final game, Redwoods strung together eight consecutive points to make it interesting.
“We battled to the end, which is a good sign,” Gleave said. “It was a goal for us so I’m happy for them and how they responded.”
CR’s Kelsey Jones led the team offensively with four kills, while Morgan Psalmonds had three kills to go with a team-high 11 assists.
CR’s Kristyn Rook had 10 digs, while Kalynn Cossolotto had six.
With the loss, Redwoods drops to 0-1 in the GVC and 4-4 overall.
The Corsairs have three games on the road next week as they play at Shasta on Wednesday before playing at Butte on Friday and Siskiyous on Saturday.
