College of the Redwoods battled back after dropping the first two sets in a Golden Valley Conference volleyball matchup in Eureka on Friday, winning the third set 25-18, but the Corsairs couldn’t carry that momentum over and fell in four to visiting Siskiyous, losing 17-25, 22-25, 25-18 and 12-25.
“Overall I thought we played with more effort today so I’m pleased about that,” said CR head coach Marla Gleave. “But, once again, when it comes down to crunch time, we don’t know how to dig down and finish strong.”
CR’s Anna Westin and Alexandria Pomila combined for 16 kills to lead the Corsairs offensive attack, while setter Morgan Psalmonds finished with 21 assists.
After dropping the opening game with five service errors in the set, CR battled toe-to-toe with Siskiyous in the second game, playing back-and-forth to a 20-20 tie.
The Eagles, however, led by Adriana Miller, who finished with a match-high 16 kills, dropped the hammer late to pick up the win.
Down but not out, however, the Corsairs rallied in the third game to win easily, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after five consecutive points with Psalmonds at the service line.
“We picked up our energy and consistency and played a great third set,” Gleave said. “But, unfortunately that momentum didn’t carry over into the fourth.”
Miller and the Eagles went back to work in the fourth game, taking a commanding 10-2 lead early and never looked back.
“I thought Anna had a great game for us at the net with touches and blocks,” Gleave said. “And Kristyn (Rook) really had a great game, being much more aggressive out there.”
CR’s Kelsey Jones and Rook had 11 digs apiece, while Bethany Rapp and Kalynn Cossolotto each had two service aces.
With the loss, Redwoods drops to 0-6 in the Golden Valley Conference and 4-9 overall.
The Corsairs play next at home against Shasta on Wednesday before playing two road matches at Feather River and Lassen next weekend.
