College of the Redwoods reached back into its rich athletic history to choose a new head women’s basketball coach. Doug Oliveira has been selected to take the reins of the program from Kara Newman who resigned to take a position with the City of Blue Lake. Oliveira participated in three sports during his time as a CR student athlete. The sport in which he really made his mark was basketball which he played from 1969-1971. He was a Corsair basketball team captain, team most valuable player, all-conference selection and was named to the 1970’s CR Basketball ‘Team of the Decade’.

Oliveira continued his playing career and education at Chico State where he completed his bachelor’s degree, teaching
certificate and administrative credential. He then embarked on an over 30-year education career in teaching, coaching and administration. He spent 26 years roaming the sidelines as a high school head basketball coach. His teams won over 360 games, nine league championships, two North Coast Section (NCS) Championships and made appearances in the California State Championship Tournament ‘Elite 8’ and ‘Final 4’.

Most recently, Oliveira coached the varsity girl’s basketball team at Hoopa Valley High to a Humboldt-Del Norte League championship in 2010. He previously coached the Hoopa Valley boy’s varsity team to NCS championships in 1992 and 1997. He recently retired as the Superintendent of the Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District. He has also served as Principal of both McKinleyville Middle School and Hoopa Valley High School.

"We are very happy to have an educator of Doug’s background become a part of our coaching staff," said CR athletic director Joe Hash. "Not only does he bring to us a great knowledge of the game and an outstanding coaching record, he also brings a professional educators perspective with an emphasis on academic as well as athletic student success. We are also looking for Doug to step in and have the ability to recruit locally right away."
