Playing with just six players on the floor, the College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team simply refused to lose in an 83-68 victory in its final game of the regular season at Shasta on Thursday.
CR, which was without the services of its top defensive player in Kiahna Bell, who did not make the trip due to illness, the Corsairs overcame foul trouble and fatigue to outscore Shasta 49-28 in the second half to keep its postseason hopes alive.
“No matter if we make the playoffs or not, it was just a tremendous way to end the regular season,” said CR head coach Doug Oliveira. “It was really an incredible game. We were tired, they were tired, but we just found a way to dig deep and get it done.”
Trailing by six points at halftime and with three players (half of their team) in foul trouble, the Corsairs exploded to start the second half, opening the period on a 29-11 run to take a 10-point lead.
CR’s Lili Herrera finished with a team-high 24 points, while Hannah Hurley scored a career high 23 points, including a 3-pointer, to spur the Corsairs to victory.
“Hannah was huge for us tonight,” Oliveira said. “She was a force inside rebounding and keeping balls alive and just worked her tail off.”
CR had three players with four fouls with more than seven minutes remaining, but, down the stretch, the Corsairs went 8-for-10 from the free-throw line to seal the win.
“It was just a tremendous, gutsy effort from our team,” Oliveira said. “The girls gave everything they had.”
With the win, CR finishes in second place of the GVC with an 8-2 record (12-13 overall) and will wait anxiously for Monday’s seeding meeting when the state playoff teams will be announced.
The top 18 teams from the Northern and Southern California regions make the postseason and the Corsairs are right on the bubble.
“We just have to wait and see,” Oliveira said.
