The California Student Opportunity and Access Program (CalSOAP) is a grant funded program that was created in 1978 to assist pre-college students who have grown up in a limited-income family and/or with parents who have not attended college. As a consortium, CalSOAP partners with school districts, California community colleges, California public universities and community agencies and business. We provide access to college and an opportunity for academic success for students in our partner schools and their families.
Our mission is to combine resources with partners to increase the college-going rate among students within our service area who traditionally do not attend postsecondary institutions (e.g., low income, first generation attending college). We serve 4,776 rugged square miles of the northern coastal region of California, where less than 200,000 people reside.Â
CalSOAP works hard to bring our services to students at the schools we serve through a variety of programs such as:
- I’m Going to College- program for 4th grade students in Fort Bragg and Crescent City providing financial aid, pre-college information and a college tour.
- Visiting College Students- program for 7-8th grade students in more rural and remote elementary schools providing pre-college information given by college students.
- College Knowledge- tutoring services for students in middle and high school partner schools to help increase students academic success.
- Peer Advising for high school students in participating partner schools on study skills, career exploration and college and financial aid options is also offered.
- Scholarship opportunities for those students who have been intensively served by CalSOAP during high school become eligible to receive our Northcoast College Access Scholarship
- Coordinating events and opportunities for students to access college information and meet college representatives. Some events we coordinate are Humboldt/Del Norte College Night, Career Exploration Day, University of California visits. These events increase college awareness among the students that CalSOAP serves.
- Dissemination of literature/information to students of upcoming deadlines, calendars and events to assist students with their college planning process.
Participating partner schools include:
Academy of the Redwoods, Crescent Elk Middle School, Del Norte High School, Eureka High School, Ferndale Elementary, Ferndale High School, Fortuna Middle School, Fortuna Union High School, Hoopa High School, Loleta Elementary School and Zane Middle School.
