Our Mission
Funded by the California Student Aid Commission, CalSOAP’s mission is to increase the number of “underrepresented” students from our area who continue on to college. We accomplish this by:

1) increasing the information about financial aid and post-secondary opportunities to students and families who traditionally would not attend college,
2)
improving students’ access to higher education by raising their academic achievement levels, and
3)
decreasing the duplication of local services by coordinating the efforts of college outreach and support programs.

Although we can serve all students in the region, we specifically seek students who are from limited income families or students who would be the first in their family to graduate from a 4-year college. We attain the goal of increasing the number of our college-bound students by working regionally as well as in specific schools.

Regional College Outreach Coordination includes:

  • Tutor Training
  • Career and College Fair
  • Local Scholarship Directory
  • University of California Admissions Visits
  • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
  • Intersegmental Outreach Meetings
  • Financial Aid Conference

Direct Services to Students include:

  • College Knowledge tutoring and pre-college advising, 9–12th grades
  • College Knowledge tutoring for 3rd–8th grades
  • Visiting College Students presentations to remote and rural 4–8th graders
  • Student Transfer and Assistance Resource Program at College of the Redwoods
  • I’m Going to College presentation and college visit for 4th graders

We employ more than 90 college students who receive 20 hours of training in tutoring and pre-college advising, and who work in our partner schools.

Our Success
In the 20 years of its existence, 75% of students involved in CalSOAP programs statewide have continued on to college—significantly more than the state average of 49%. On the North Coast the program is working well, with over 70% of the seniors who are involved in College Knowledge continuing on to college or technical programs.

Partners Make it Possible
Because CalSOAP funding must be matched locally, our partners make CalSOAP services possible.
