ART-1A Art History: Pre-History to Gothic
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC Survey of visual arts
from the pre-historic to the Gothic age. Cultures covered
include the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Aegean, Greece, Rome,
Medieval, Islamic, Romanesque, and Gothic. The focus will
be on broad cultural and historical influences, unique periods
and styles, and on the subtle psychology of individual artistic

ART-1B Art History: Renaissance to Contemporary
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC Survey of visual art
of Western Europe from the fifteenth through the twentieth
centuries, as well as contemporary art from Europe and
America. The focus will be on broad cultural and historical
influences, unique periods and styles, and on the subtle

ART-2 Introduction to Art
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC A course to provide
beginning students studio and lecture experience in the visual
arts. Students will undertake a series of projects using a variety
of art materials such as paint, clay, film, ink, etc.
ART-3A Beginning Sculpture
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC This is a
beginning class in sculpture that will acquaint the student with
various sculptural materials and their expressive possibilities.

ART-3B Intermediate Sculpture
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of two enrollments This is an intermediate class in
sculpture that will allow the student to experience working
intensively with materials of his and her choice. The student
will conceive, plan and execute a semester-length sculptural
project based on developing a single concept or image or
developing a sense of related pieces. Prerequisite: ART-3A
ART-4 Art Appreciation
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to the
world of visual art and the creative process as they relate to
historical, cultural and personal issues.
ART-5 Introduction to Tribal Art
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A survey of visual art
from Native North American, African, and Oceanic cultures.
Representative art forms from prehistoric times to the present
illustrate the roles of both tradition and innovation in the
creation of non-Western tribal arts and provide an awareness
of the importance of a global perspective in the field of art
history.
ART-6 20th Century Art
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A detailed survey
of modern art and architecture from the mid-nineteenth
century to the present. Important artistic movements covered
will include Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Fauvism, Cubism,
Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Post-Modern
Art, among others.
ART-10 Color and Design
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC This is an
introduction to the various elements and principles upon
which all visual art forms are structured such as: line, shape,
texture, value and color. Color mixing and interaction will
be emphasized. The student will explore design theory and
principles such as directional movement, balance, dimension,
proportion and composition. An inventive approach will be
used emphasizing traditional and contemporary concepts.

ART-11 Three-Dimensional Design
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction
to designing and constructing three-dimensional works in
simple, inexpensive materials such as: paper, wood, plaster,
clay, papier-mache, wire, etc. (CAN ART16)
ART-14 Gallery Exhibition and Portfolio
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU An exploration of various
professional careers in the visual arts. The practical aspects
of professionalism are presented and include portfolio and
resume preparation, gallery and exhibition management,
and exposure to professionals in the fine and commercial art
fields. Note: Field trips are required. The College does not provide
transportation.
ART-16 Lettering and Layout
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments A course developed around the evolution
of the alphabet. Emphasis will be given to calligraphic
forms construction through pen, reed and brush with an
introduction to concepts of layout in relationship to modern
day design and commercial production.
ART-17 Drawing
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Drawing
problems are presented in sequence to build the skills and
confidence necessary to express oneself visually. Required of
the art major, recommended for the architecture major. (CAN

ART-18 Intermediate Drawing
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC A continuation of
the basic drawing skills and techniques introduced in ART-17.
Students will learn how to develop more refined skills while
cultivating personal working methods and content within
their drawings. They will learn about contemporary drawing
issues and media. The course will also explore experimental
and conceptual approaches to gathering and showing work.

ART-18L Intermediate Drawing Lab
(2 units lab) CR/NC only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of two
enrollments Designed for students who desire to further
develop their drawing skills. Instructors provide instruction
through an individual contract that encourages student
exploration and personal direction. Prerequisite: ART-18
ART-19 Figure Drawing
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction
to all the fundamentals for drawing the living human
form. Included will be exercises in structure, proportion,
foreshortening portraiture, and anatomy. Students will also
explore the expressive characteristics and narrative possibilities
of the human form in both traditional and contemporary
contexts. Recommended: ART-17 Note: Nude and clothed models are
used in this course.
ART-20 Illustration
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments An intermediate level course designed to
familiarize students with the skills and demands placed upon
the commercial illustrator. Weekly assignments will address a
variety of applications in black and white and color from cover
art through cartooning and book illustration. Prerequisite: ART-
17 Recommended: ART-10
ART-22 Watercolor
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of two enrollments Projects will be given in water-
based media with both opaque and transparent techniques.
Work will be done from still life and landscape. Required of the
art major and recommended for the architecture major. Many
field trips (the College does not provide transportation) will be
taken to utilize local subject matter for painting. Prerequisite:
ART-10 or ART-17
ART-23 Painting
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of two enrollments The principles of painting using
traditional and experimental approaches with emphasis on
basic techniques and composition. Oil and synthetic media are
used. Recommended: ART-10 or ART-17 (CAN ART10)
ART-26 Sculpture From the Figure
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of two enrollments This is a course in which the
figure is used as the starting point for sculpture in a variety
of materials including clay, cast stone and plaster. The
student will explore the figure as a source of both form and
content and will be encouraged to use the figure realistically,
expressively and abstractly in the development of works of art.

ART-28 Figure Painting
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to
a maximum of two enrollments This course focuses on the
discipline of figurative painting. It is the logical extension of
figure drawing with the increased opportunity to work with
paint media. Additionally, the class will explore in-depth the
areas of anatomy, composition, color, portraiture, light and
shadow on the figure, facial expression and the illusion and
drapery of the figure. Recommended: ART-19 or ART-23
ART-31A Introduction to Ceramics
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC An introductory
class in ceramic exploration for students with little or no
previous experience. The student will learn and practice
techniques used to produce ceramic forms both functional and
nonfunctional. (CAN ART6)
ART-31B Ceramics (Wheel)
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of two enrollments A beginning class in ceramics using
the potter’s wheel to explore ceramic forms. An introduction
to basic glaze chemistry and kiln procedures will be presented.
Prerequisite: ART-31A
ART-32 Experimental Ceramics
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of two enrollments An intermediate level class
for continuing students in ceramics with an emphasis on
experimental directions in clay and glazes. Prerequisite: ART-
31B
ART-35 Photography
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to
a maximum of two enrollments A course in black and white
photography including camera operation, film exposure
and development, print enlarging techniques and print
presentation. Emphasis will be placed on development of
basic visual and technical skills, sensitizing of environmental
awareness through picture making assignments and the
subjects and styles of major photographers, and on developing
an understanding of photography as a functional tool of
visual communication. More advanced or repeating students
will receive instruction in a range of techniques used to make
fine prints while refining visual, compositional and aesthetic
ideas photographically. Students will be encouraged to
explore topics of personal interest to develop individual visual

ART-36 Color Photography
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
two enrollments An introduction to the theory, practice and
aesthetics of color photography. It encompasses the seeing,
shooting, processing and printing of color slide and negative
materials. It emphasizes development of both technical and
visual skills as well as a practical knowledge of the uses of
color in relation to the range of fine art and career color
photography in practice today. Prerequisite: ART-35
ART-37 Experimental Photography
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments A survey of creative and non-traditional
photographic techniques. Students will experiment with light
sensitive materials and photo-printmaking processes in order
to expand their understanding of materials and techniques.
Emphasis will be placed on experimentation and exploration
of the possibilities of completion of experimental photographs
using drawings, paintings, and other two- and three-
dimensional art processes. Prerequisite: ART-35
ART-38 Landscape Photography
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments A course designed to photographically
explore the landscape. Emphasis will be placed on individual
exploration of past and present modes of landscape
photography. Field assignments will encourage the exploration
of our varied local landscapes. Class demonstrations and
assignments will encourage development of individual
technical and visual skills and definition of a personal
philosophy regarding the landscape. Prerequisite: ART-35
ART-39 Commercial Photography
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
two enrollments Introduction to applications of photography in
the contemporary marketplace. Instruction will cover various
aspects including technical, aesthetics, basic management
and fundamental legal aspects of a wide range of commercial
photography and photo-related careers. Emphasis will be
placed on providing information on a wide range of careers,
including how and where to get formal training and education
as well as first-hand visits to work places of various career
photographers. Prerequisite: ART-35 or ART-36
ART-43A Basic Digital Imaging
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction
to current photographic computer technology. Focus is on
computer manipulation of photography as currently used in
graphic design, commercial photography, fine art photography
and communication media fields.
ART-43B Intermediate Digital Imaging
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC An intermediate
level of study enabling students to expand their capabilities
in computerized electronic imaging. Intermediate techniques
in the manipulation, alteration, and enhancement of digital
photography will be emphasized. This in-depth exploration
will provide the student with skills to create his/her own
expressive images and explore the various electronic methods
of input and output. This course is designed for students who
have a basic knowledge of digital imaging. Prerequisite: ART-43A
ART-44 Introduction to Printmaking
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC This class will
introduce students to the four basic types of printmaking:
intaglio, relief, planographic and stencil (screen printing).
Students who have skills and interests in drawing and
painting will learn how unique works of art such as a
watercolor might be translated into multiples through such
processes as woodblock print, serigraphy and engraving.

ART-45 Printmaking - Silkscreen and Relief
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of three enrollments Projects in graphic design
utilizing the techniques required for silkscreen and relief
printing will be done. Recommended: ART-10 and ART-17
ART-47 Etching Techniques
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a
maximum of two enrollments This class will introduce students
to intaglio printmaking. It is designed for students who are
interested in drawing and expanding their drawing skills
with printmaking techniques. The techniques will include
black line, tone and a variety of texture-generating processes.
Students will examine artistic concerns for paper, inks and
archival preservation of artwork. Students will discover the
meaning of an original print. Prerequisite: ART-17
ART-52 Open Lab for Art
(1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum
of four enrollments Designed for students who desire to further
develop their skills in a variety of art media. Instructors
provide instruction through an individual contract that
encourages student exploration and personal direction.
ART-53 Photography Lab
(0.5 - 3 units lab) CR/NC only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
four enrollments A course designed to develop greater skills in
photography darkroom and printing techniques. Note: Units

ART-54 Drawing Lab
(1 unit lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum
of three enrollments The drawing lab shall serve as an
environment for those wishing to pursue a personal direction
using any drawing media. Prerequisite: ART-17
ART-55 Lettering Lab
(1 unit lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of three
enrollments A course designed to further skills in the area of
calligraphy and or lettering. New ideas and techniques will be
explored. Prerequisite: ART-16
ART-56 Figure Drawing Lab
(1 unit lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum
of three enrollments A course designed to develop greater
skill in drawing from the human form. Both classical and

ART-57 Painting Lab
(1 unit lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of
three enrollments A course designed to explore the painting
area in depth. Emphasis on media exploration. Individual
directions will be encouraged. Prerequisite: ART-20 or ART-22 or
ART-23
ART-58 Printmaking Lab
(1 unit lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum
of three enrollments This course is designed to further skills
in the area of printmaking. New ideas and processes will
be explored, including combinations of relief, intaglio,
planographic and stencil techniques in a single image.

ART-59 Ceramics Lab
(1 unit lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of
three enrollments The ceramics lab was designed for the student
who wants to concentrate or focus on a particular area of
ceramics. Prerequisite: ART-31A or ART-31B
ART-60 Jewelry
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments A course designed to introduce students
to the necessary skills and techniques for the designing and
construction of jewelry. Basic hand processes in fabrication
methods in copper, brass, silver and gold includes soldering,
riveting, forging, stone setting, etc. will be included. A slide
study of historic and contemporary examples will be shown.
ART-60L Jewelry Lab
(2 units lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
three enrollments This course will concentrate on personal
development in the jewelry arts. Students will participate in
a variety of individual and group assignments based on their
goals for the semester. Prerequisite: ART-60
ART-61 Basic Weaving and Textile Processes
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments This course is an introduction to weaving
and basketry, including twining, coiling, plaiting, design and
form, color and dyeing of fiber, yarns, pattern drafting, tools,
collection and use of materials, philosophy and tradition. The
student will also be introduced to a variety of textile processes
including: felt making, card weaving and Inkle or band
weaving and weaving on portable small looms, table looms
and frame looms.
ART-62 Weaving
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
two enrollments The course covers the foundation of weaving.
Topics such as plain weaves, twills, tapestry, rug knots, lace
weaves and pattern weaves will be explored. The course also
includes an exploration of tapestry looms and four-harness
looms. Traditional and contemporary weaving styles will
be presented. Topics also include pattern drafting, yarn
calculations, yarns and fibers, finishes and design principles
related to weaving.
ART-62L Weaving Lab
(2 units lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of four
enrollments This course is designed for further development of
weaving skills. A variety of assignments will explore advanced
woven structures as well as experimental materials and
processes. Individual direction will be encouraged. Prerequisite:
ART-62
ART-63 Fibers, Yarns and Fabric
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU and UC An introduction to
fibers and the construction of yarns and fabrics. Consideration
will be given to the chemistry and characteristics of fibers and
how these factors affect the resulting yarns and fabrics. Fabrics
also will be studied for structure as well as for suitability for
printing, dyeing, finishing and other textile uses.
ART-64 Fabric Print and Dyeing
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments Topics covered in this course include: An
introduction to fabric printing and dyeing; fabric painting;
block and stencil printing; resists such as batik, gutta, tie-
dye and stitch dye; screen painting; and other surface
design processes. Topics also include the characteristics and
appropriate use of fabrics, dyes and textile paints. Color and
design, especially patterning, are also addressed.
ART-67 Documentary Photography
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
two enrollments A course that will survey past and present uses
of documentary photography. Creative projects will explore
the traditions and uses of the photograph as documentation.
Emphasis will be placed on the production of a documentary
portfolio that exemplifies the student’s individual ideas and
concerns in the field of documentary photography. Prerequisite:
ART-35
ART-69 Textile History
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU A survey of textiles from
prehistory to the present. This course will consider the role of
textiles in history and in cultures. Some topics to be considered
are: tools and techniques; belief systems; rituals; centers of
production and trade; fashion and costume; design styles,
aesthetics, and motifs. Several cultures/textiles will be studied
in depth.
ART-70 Environmental Sculpture
(1 unit lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC Repeatable to
a maximum of three enrollments This class will cover the
aesthetic and physical process of making a sculpture in the
environment. Students will make a permanent work of art
as a group project(s). Selection of appropriate materials and
site will be emphasized as well as structural engineering and
creative design.
ART-71 Stained/Leaded Glass
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU A study of skills,
techniques and materials related to fundamental mastery of
the art of leaded stained glass.
ART-87 Techniques in the Visual Arts
(1 unit lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
three enrollments This course will introduce the student to
advanced techniques used by artists in the field of visual arts.
It will combine lecture/demonstrations on these techniques
and through a mandatory project provide the student with the
opportunity of experiencing the presented method.
ART-110 Art for the Person With Disabilities
(2 units lecture/lab) CR/NC only Repeatable to a maximum of four
enrollments A course to aid students physically in their abilities
to participate in basic art skills. Course will provide disabled
students with a series of projects using a variety of materials
adapted to meet their individual needs. Participation in this
course is contingent upon participation in the Individualized
Educational Plan (IEP) process.
ART-146 Monoprint Techniques
(1 unit lecture/lab) Grade Only This course is designed to
introduce students to the Painterly Print. Monotypes are one-
of-a-kind images created with oil-based pigments worked over
metal, plastic, or low relief plates and printed on absorbent
printing paper. While the process is centuries old, its great
popularity among artists and dealers has surfaced only in the
last decade. Students will develop images using black field
manner: collage polychrome and multiple-run monotypes and
monoprints. Recommended: ART-17 and ART-22 and ART-23
ART-150 Techniques in Eastern Papermaking
(1 unit lecture/lab) CR/NC option Repeatable to a maximum of three
enrollments An introduction to the centuries old techniques of
Eastern papermaking. Students will learn how to collect and
process native and imported fibers suitable for papermaking.
They will learn fiber properties and formative techniques
that yield fine quality handmade papers. This course will also
explore coloring and decorative techniques in making Eastern
style papers.
ART-151 Techniques in Western Papermaking and
Papercasting
(1 unit lecture/lab) CR/NC option Repeatable to a maximum of
three enrollments An introduction to the Western tradition of
papermaking and paper casting. Students will learn how to
collect and process native and imported fibers suitable for
papermaking. Students will learn how to process appropriate
fibers including recyclable papers suitable for hand
papermaking and casting as 3-D art. They will explore fiber
properties, additives, and formation techniques appropriate to
produce fine quality art paper and sculpture. Emphasis will be
placed upon the use of paper pulp as a fine art medium.
ART-155 Mosaic Techniques
(1 unit lecture/lab) CR/NC option Studio course in Mosaic
Techniques, which includes brief history, exploration of direct
and indirect application of mosaic with emphasis on color and
design. Students will also use modern applications: cracked
tile, bas-relief, pique anisette, and sculpture.
ART-163 Rug and Tapestry Weaving
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only Repeatable to a maximum of two
enrollments Topics include: An investigation of various loom-
controlled as well as finger-controlled weaves appropriate to
both weft and warp faced rugs. An introduction to traditional
as well as contemporary tapestry weaving techniques.
Prerequisite: ART-61
ART-165 Fabric Printing
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only Repeatable to a maximum of two
enrollments Special investigation into various aspects of
fabric printing: block, stencil, resist printing, screen processes
including photo emulsions, etc. Topics include lecture/
demonstration of techniques used for increasing production
and focusing on depth rather than breadth. Prerequisite:ART-64
ART-166 Fabric and Yarn Dyeing
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only Repeatable to a maximum of two
enrollments A serious investigation of various aspects of fabric
or yarn dyeing: direct application (painting, etc.); resists
(batik, gutta, tie-dye, clamp-dye, stitch dye, etc.); mordant
or leaf print; dye pot yarn or fabric dyeing; painted warps
or combinations of the above. After the initial investigation
of a variety of processes, students will focus on one or
more processes and work with them to become proficient.
