Course Descriptions

CHEM-1A General Chemistry
(5 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC The principles of chemistry for students in science, engineering, medical and related professions are covered. Atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, the periodic table, enthalpy, solutions, and nuclear chemistry will be studied. Laboratory assignments include safety rules and procedures and the study of physical and chemical properties. Prerequisite: MATH-120; and either CHEM-100 or high school chemistry Note: Intended primarily for science majors. (CAN CHEM2)

CHEM-1B General Chemistry
(5 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC This course is a continuation of CHEM-1A. Intermolecular forces, solutions, kinetics, equilibria, acids and bases, reactions, thermodynamics, oxidation-reduction and the chemistry of elements and compounds will be studied. Prerequisite: CHEM- 1A (CAN CHEM4)

CHEM-2 Introduction to Chemistry
(5 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC An introduction to basic chemical principles. This fundamental approach serves as a beginning course for allied science fields. Prerequisite: MATH-105/106 (CAN CHEM6)

CHEM-3 Introduction to Organic Chemistry
(4 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC A course in basic organic chemistry for allied science majors. This is an introductory survey of organic compounds and reactions. Prerequisite: CHEM-2 (CAN CHEM8)

CHEM-8 Organic Chemistry
(5 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC A survey of important classes of organic compounds with emphasis on materials of interest to students of the biological sciences, pre- professional programs and related areas. The laboratory work introduces the fundamental techniques using both macro and micro scale equipment for the purification, synthesis and identification of organic compounds, while illustrating the basic chemistry of the functional groups. Prerequisite: CHEM-1A

CHEM-100 Preparation for General Chemistry
(4 units lecture) CR/NC option A brief introduction to the principles of chemistry and the application of mathematics to chemistry. CHEM-100 is intended to prepare students for General Chemistry (CHEM-1A) who did not take high school chemistry or whose prior chemistry is outdated. Prerequisite: MATH-105/106

CHEM-152 Chemistry Tutorial Lab
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments Individualized practice and/or review skills necessary for success in a CHEM class. Note: Units offered may vary by semester. Consult Schedule of Classes for section information.
