Text Box: Upon successful completion of this program, students will know

• Basic drug categories, including signs of intoxication, addiction, overdose, and withdrawal.
• Essential concepts of drug use, abuse, and addiction.
• Basic theories of the causes of addiction and theories of treatment and prevention, including harm-     reduction and abstinence-based approaches.
• Specific options for assessment, treatment, and support for addicted persons and their families.
• Ways in which culture, the legal system, family, and genetics influence drug use.
• Other co-existing problems common with addiction, including dual diagnosis, codependency, and other compulsive behaviors such as eating disorders.

And will be able to

• Meet the academic requirements for entry-level addiction-counselor positions.
• Meet the initial academic requirements needed to pursue addiction-counseling certification, such as CAADAC or NAADAC.
• Provide initial screening of drug-affected individuals; including screening for drug toxicity and withdrawal, and make appropriate treatment recommendations.
• Provide basic education sessions on topics related to alcohol and other drugs.

Provide entry-level counseling for groups and individuals in a chemical-dependency treatment setting.
