Financial Aid & Scholarships

FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS AVAILABLE AT COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS

BOG (Board of Governors Fee Waiver)

This California state funded fee waiver program was established to assist California residents with the mandatory enrollment fee. Students enrolled in any number of units are eligible to apply. Students who are eligible for the BOG fee waiver are not required to pay the Student Health Fee. (For more specific information about this waiver, see p.14.)

To apply, students should complete the FAFSA (recommended) or the BOG application available at the Financial Aid Office, DSPS, or on the CR website. The BOG application should be submitted to the Financial Aid Office prior to registering for classes.

Federal Pell Grant

This program is a federally funded grant program which provides awards to undergraduate students. Students who have received a BA or BS degree are not eligible for this program.

To apply, students must complete the FAFSA form, listing College of the Redwoods (Federal School Code 001185). The processing center will send each student a Student Aid Report (SAR), which should be reviewed carefully for accuracy. If errors exist, the student should contact the Financial Aid Office for assistance. If additional information is necessary, the Financial Aid Office will contact the student.

  • Maximum award:
  • Awards range from $400 - $4,310 per year.
  • (Note: Award amounts are subject to change by Congressional action.)

ACG [ Academic Competitiveness Grant]

To apply, students must be enrolled full-time, be a Pell Grant recipient, a U. S. citizen, and provide proof from their high school that they meet the definition of a rigorous program. (For high school graduates after 2005)

SEOG ( Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant)

This is a federal grant program. College of the Redwoods has a very limited amount of funding in this program, so students should apply early to be considered for this program.

To apply, students must complete the FAFSA, and any other forms which the Financial Aid Office sends to them after your FAFSA is processed.

  • Awards range from $100 - $600 per year.

Cal Grants

These grants are awarded by the California Student Aid Commission; only California residents are eligible. The Cal Grant B and Cal Grant C programs are available to students enrolled at College of the Redwoods. (The third Cal Grant program, Cal Grant A, is available only at four-year colleges and universities.)

To apply, new applicants must complete the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form (if not submitted electronically by the shcool) and the FAFSA. Renewal applicants must complete the FAFSA. The completed FAFSA should be mailed to the Processor for processing no later than March 2, 2007

  • Awards range from $300 - $1,551 per year, depending upon state funding.

BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) Grant

These grants are available to qualified Native American students through tribal or federal BIA funding.

To apply, students should contact the tribe or the BIA for application forms. In addition, the FASFA must be completed and filed.

  • Awards vary per year, depending upon tribal and BIA resources as well as student costs.

Federal Work- Study

This program provides on-campus jobs to students. Students can work until they have earned their entire award amount. College of the Redwoods has a very limited amount of funding in this program, so students should apply early to be considered for this program.

To apply, students must complete the FAFSA, the Financial Aid Information Form and any other documents sent by the Financial Aid Office after your FAFSA has been processed.

  • Maximum award:
  • Awards range from $500 - $3,000 per year; hourly wage rate is subject to change.

Federal Stafford Loan

This is a low-interest student loan. This loan program should be considered only as a last resort after all other options have been considered. Information on interest rates and repayment plans is available from the Financial Aid Office.

To apply, students must complete the FAFSA, and any other documents sent by the Financial Aid Office after the FAFSA has been processed. If, after the notification of the financial aid award has been received, the student feels that s/he will need additional funding, the student can request a loan process packet from the Financial Aid Office. Before the loan application will be processed, applicants must complete loan counseling as described in the loan process packet.

Remember: Loans must be repaid. Examine your total loan debt each year.

PLUS Loan for Parents

Federal PLUS loans are available to parents of undergraduate students. Loan limits vary with the cost of the student’s educational program and the amount of other financial aid received. The interest rate is variable, but it is capped at 9.0 percent. A credit check is required. To apply, students must have a FAFSA on file. Interested parents should contact the Fnancial Aid Office for more information. Varies with cost and amount of other aid received.

*There are important distinctions between and definitions related to dependent and independent student status. Students should contact the Financial Aid Office if they have any questions about whether they would be considered independent or dependent for financial aid purposes.
