Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum for Transfer to California State University and University of California, 2007-2008

Completion of all the requirements in the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) plus additional transferable course work to total 60 semester units will permit a student to transfer from a community college to a campus in either the California State University or University of California system without the need, after transfer, to take additional lower division general education courses to satisfy campus general education requirements.

The course requirements for areas 1 through 5 must be completed before the IGETC can be certified. All courses must be completed with grades of C or better. UC certification requires that Areas 1 though 5 and the foreign language requirement must be completed.

Some UC majors will not accept IGETC certification.

Be sure to check with your Counselor.

Area 1 - English Composition

CSU: 3 courses required—one from each group below

UC: 2 courses required, one each from group A and group B

Group A: English Composition: ENGL 1A

Group B: Critical Thinking/English Composition ENGL 1B

Group C: Oral Communication (CSU only); SPCH 1

Area 2 - Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning

1 Math course: MATH 15, 21, 22, 30, 50A

Area 3 - Arts and Humanities

At least 3 courses with at least one from the Arts and one from the Humanities, 9 semester units:

Arts: ART 1A, 1B, 4; CINE 1, 2; DRAMA 24; MUS 1, 10, 12, 14

Humanities: ENGL 8, 9, 10, 17, 18, 20, 22, 47, 61, 61; ENVSC 11; FRNC 2A, 2B; GERM 2A, 2B; HIST 4, 5; PHIL 10, 15; SPAN 2A, 2B

Area 4 - Social and Behavioral Sciences

At least 3 courses from at least two disciplines: AJ 1; ANTH 1, 2, 3, 5; ECON 1, 10, 20; GEOG 2; HIST 7, 8, 9, 11, 12; JOURN 5; NAS 1, NAS 21; POLSC 1, 10; PSYCH 1, 11, 30; SOC 1, 2, 3, 5

Area 5 - Physical and Biological Sciences

2 courses required—one Physical Science and one Biological Science; at least one must include a laboratory, 7-9 semester units. Lab classes are noted with an *:

Physical Sciences:

ASTRO 10, 11, 15A*; CHEM 1A*, 2*;
ENVSC 12, GEOG 1; GEOL 1*, 10, 15;
METEO 1; OCEAN 10, 11*, 12; PHYS 10

Biological Sciences:

BIOL 1*, 3*, 10*, 15*; ENVSC 10*

Language Other Than English

Complete 2 years of the same foreign language of high school level work with a grade of C or better, or earn a score of 3 or higher on the foreign language Advanced Placement test, or 550 on the College Board Achievement Test in Foreign Language or complete one of the courses listed below:

FRNC 1B, GERM 1B, JPN 1B, SPAN 1B or Sign Language 4B.

Note: One semester of a foreign language at College of the Redwoods is equivalent to one year of a high school language.

Also, to receive IGETC certification for language courses completed in high school, official transcripts must be on file with the College of the Redwoods Admissions Office.

Not required for IGETC

U.S. History, Constitution and American Ideals ( CSU requirement only)

Graduation requirements for CSU—6 units, one course from group A and one course from group B:

Group A: POLSC 10

Group B: ECON 20; HIST 8, 9; NAS 21

Note: Courses used to fulfill the U.S. History, Constitution and American Ideals requirement may not also be used to satisfy IGETC requirements in Area 4.
