At Del Norte and on the Mendocino Coast, these services may be found in the campus Library. On the Eureka campus, the Academic Support Center is located next to the library area inside the Learning Resource Center (pg. 36 & 37). All locations offer free instructional support services in a variety of forms: individual and small group tutoring, instruction services, referrals, access to multiple computer stations, DSPS and make-up testing, English and math skills evaluation, media viewing, private study areas, and the Writing Center. The Academic Support Center welcomes all students, faculty, and staff. Below is more information about the core services offered by the Academic Support Center. Tutoring Services The ASC provides free tutoring in content-area courses and learning/study strategies for individuals and small groups. Senior instructional assistants and trained peer tutors are available by drop-in and/or appointment. Testing and Assessment Services The ASC offers a variety of testing/assessment services to support classroom instruction and serve the public at large. All examinations given by the Center must be authorized by the instructor and all students taking exams must have a valid picture ID, such as a government-issued ID, state ID, driver’s license, or College of the Redwoods ID card. The Writing Center The Writing Center provides students with expert tutorial assistance from CR English instructors and trained peer tutors.
In addition, the Writing Center offers a private study area for students who wish to work on English assignments. Math Lab Students who take any math course at CR are encouraged to enroll in Math 152 -The Math Lab. The Math Lab is located at the back of the Academic Support Center. Students can receive tutorial assistance from CR Math instructors or peer tutors. Students may sign up for either 0.5 or 1.0 units of credit. Instruction Services The ASC has a selection of handouts for students on essay writing, speech preparation, grammar, punctuation, MLA and APA documentation, résumé writing, and learning, study, and test-taking strategies, among others. Throughout the academic year, the ASC offers scheduled workshops on similar topics. Instructors who wish to have ASC staff provide tours of the facility or in-class workshops should contact the Assessment Supervisor to set up an appointment. Student Referral Services Instructors, academic counselors, or advisors who have identified students as requiring additional help in their coursework, are encouraged to refer those students to the ASC for assistance. Similarly, instructors who have identified students as academically advanced and interpersonally mature are encouraged to recommend those students to the ASC as potential peer tutors. Computer Access The ASC has a number of computer stations with Internet capabilities, all of which are connected to laser printers. Students may use word processing programs, make spreadsheets, or create PowerPoint presentations using Microsoft XP software. Computer-assisted programs are already available for some disciplines, and instructors may contact the ASC if they wish to develop or purchase additional software. There may be a nominal fee for printing. Media Services The ASC offers space where students may listen to or view instructional media materials. Reserve materials, such as audio or videotapes, CDs, and DVDs, are indexed in the Library’s computer catalog and must be checked out at the Library Circulation Desk. Students are encouraged to stop by the ASC and use the available equipment. Room Reservation Services The ASC has six small rooms in which individuals or small groups may meet and/or study for a limited period of time. Although students must reserve most of the rooms one week in advance, drop-ins are available on a first-come, first-served basis. General Education Development (GED) GED testing is available through the Academic Support Center. GED test preparation classes are offered through local Adult Education Centers and the Private Industry Council (PIC). Services for Students Home |
