Addiction Studies (ADCT)
ADCT-10 Introduction to Addiction Studies
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU An overview of the historical
and contemporary role of drugs in society emphasizing the
physical, social, and emotional consequences of alcohol and
other drug use and abuse within a general systems theory
framework. Topics will include disease etiology, physiological
aspects of addiction, major categories of drugs, prevention
and treatment approaches, self-care, and professional/ethical
considerations.
ADCT-11 Pharmacology and Physiology of Addiction
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU Overview of physiological
and pharmacological actions and effects of alcohol and
other drugs. Course work examines how the body develops
tolerance to drugs and how cycles of drug use and depen-
dence develop. Also explored in depth is the impact of drug
use/abuse upon society.
ADCT-12 Substance Abuse: Law, Prevention and
Education
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU An exploration of prevention
theories and practices in the field of Addictions. Governmental
drug control policies, legal enforcements, and educational
and community strategies will be addressed and evaluated in
terms of the social, economic and cultural milieu in the United
States.
ADCT-13 Substance Abuse in Special Populations
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU An examination of the special
issues involved in the etiology, treatment and prevention of
alcoholism and other types of substance abuse among specific
populations of high-risk groups, with special concerns or
problems unique to that population.
ADCT-14 Health, Nutrition and Addiction
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU An exploration of the health
consequences of addictive behaviors including eating
disorders and the effect of the use, misuse, and abuse of drugs
and alcohol on health and nutrition.
ADCT-15 Introduction to Counseling Skills
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU A presentation of the
theoretical concepts of counseling for individuals, families,
and groups. Processed role-plays help students to develop
effective core counseling skills. Personal values, ethical, legal,
and crisis intervention issues are also addressed.
ADCT-16 Addiction and the Family System
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU An exploration of how
family and community systems perceive the individual’s
development from childhood to adulthood, emphasizing the
intervention to interrupt addictive family patterns.
ADCT-17 Field Studies II
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU A seminar providing
the advanced candidate with supervised field study with
an approved services agency. Candidates will synthesize
concurrent field experience through dialogue, videotaped
exercises, and skill and technique demonstrations. Note: Must
be completing the final semester in the Addiction Studies Program to
enroll in this course.
