ENGL-1A Analytical Reading and Writing
(4 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A transfer-level
course in critical reading and reasoned writing. Students
analyze issues and claims presented in visual, oral, or
written arguments and write analytical and argumentative
essays based on those issues. Research and source-based
writing, employing correct MLA documentation, is required.
Prerequisite: ENGL 150
ENGL-1B Critical Inquiry and Literature
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A course using
literature as a basis for critical thinking and composition.
Students analyze issues, problems, and situations represented
in literature and develop effective short and long written
arguments (6000 minimum word total) in support of an
analysis. This course is designed for those students who
seek to satisfy both the full year composition and the critical
thinking transfer requirements. Prerequisite: ENGL-1A
ENGL-5 Word Origins and the English Language
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC This course is designed
to increase vocabulary and language awareness. Increasing
personal vocabulary will be approached etymologically;
that is, through an understanding of the origins of words.
A knowledge of Latin and Greek word elements will be
emphasized. In addition, the English language will be studied:
its history, nature and impact on the individual. Students will
be asked to analyze the linguistic environment in which they
live. How do words lead, mislead and empower?
ENGL-8 Introduction to Contemporary Literature
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to
the study of great literature. Students will read and discuss a
variety of representative works of poetry, fiction and drama
from 1945 - present and develop skills necessary to approach
literary masterpieces confidently. Prerequisite: ENGL-1A
ENGL-9 Introduction to Modern Literature
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to the
study of great literature from the Enlightenment through the
early 20th century. Students will read and discuss a variety of
representative works of poetry, fiction and drama, developing
the necessary skills to approach literary masterpieces
confidently. Prerequisite: ENGL-1A
ENGL-10 Introduction to Classical Literature
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction
to the study of great literature from antiquity through the
Renaissance. Students will read and discuss a variety of
representative works of poetry, fiction and drama, developing
the necessary skills to approach literary masterpieces
confidently. Prerequisite: ENGL-1A
ENGL-17 American Literature: Colonial - Civil War
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC Selected readings
from the major writers of the United States from its colonial
beginnings through the Civil War. Students will read critically
and analytically in these works so as to understand their ideas
and historical and cultural implications. Recommended: ENGL-1A
ENGL-18 American Literature: Civil War - World War II
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC Selected readings
from the major writers of the United States from post-Civil
War through World War II. Students will read critically and
analytically in these works to understand their ideas and
historical and cultural implications. Recommended: ENGL-1A
ENGL-20 Introduction to Non-Western Literature
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to the
literatures of Asia, Africa, and Latin America through the study
of major works in their literary and cultural contexts. Selected
readings are from both ancient and modern authors and
include poetry as well as representative myths, epics, stories,
and narratives. Recommended: ENGL-1A
ENGL-22 Greek Mythology
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An examination of
classical Greek mythology as stories whose ultimate meaning
is psychological rather than concrete. The course examines the
relationship of mythology, which expresses that which is most
universally human within material that is often personal or
historical in origin, with the archetypal patterns in literature.

ENGL-28 Women in Literature
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC This course examines
literature by and about women from the Middle Ages to
the present, with an emphasis on contrasting mythical
interpretations of what women are with what women
themselves have written about their lives. Short stories, novels
and poems are studied in terms of the literary elements used
to reinforce the authors’ themes.
ENGL-32 Creative Writing: Poetry
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU A study in developing the
art of writing poetry, emphasizing communication, clarity, and
economy. Students read and analyze many types of poetry
while they generate, develop, critique, and revise their own
and others’ poems. Recommended: ENGL-150
ENGL-33 Creative Writing: Prose
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU This course involves
analysis of literary models and prose writing (primarily short
fiction); includes student and teacher critiques.
ENGL-41 English Skills Tutoring
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Tutoring primarily
basic skills students in English in the Writing Center while
simultaneously acquiring (in the seminar portion) specific
skills and techniques in tutoring. Students will learn how
to question and to listen more effectively, how to evaluate,
diagnose, and remediate writing problems, and how to assess
which tutoring strategy is most appropriate for the individual
learning situation. Note: Prospective students must obtain a faculty

ENGL-47 Introduction to Shakespeare
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to
Shakespeare’s drama through the study of major works in
their literary, intellectual, and social contexts. Readings will
include poetry as well as six to eight representative comedies,
tragedies, histories, and romances. Recommended: ENGL-1A
ENGL-60 Introduction to British Literature: Beginnings
Through the 18th Century
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to
British literature from the middle ages through the eighteenth
century. Students will explore the ideas and literary features
of major works within their historical and cultural contexts.

ENGL-61 Introduction to British Literature:
Romanticism to the Present
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to
British literature from the Romantic period to the present.
Students will explore the ideas and literary features of
major works within their historical and cultural contexts.

ENGL-70 Student Magazine Production
2 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU Repeatable to a maximum
of two enrollments This class will produce a student literary
magazine, in conjunction with a graphic design class. Students
will solicit, select and edit material for publication and will
market the magazine.
ENGL-150 College Reading and Writing
(3 units lecture) Grade Only A course in the development
of college-level reading and writing skills. Written work
progresses from brief essays to college-level essays based on
critical reading. This course is not transferable to a four-year
university. Prerequisite: ENGL-350 Corequisite: ENGL-150L
ENGL-150L English Skills Practicum
(0.5 units lab) CR/NC only Guided practice in the development
of college-level reading and writing skills. Students receive
individualized instruction in critical reading, in the
conventions of standard written English, and in all stages
of the writing process.Essential tutorial support and other
resources for English 150 assignments are provided.
ENGL-152 The English Lab
(0.5 - 2 units lab) CR/NC only Repeatable to a maximum of four
enrollments The English Lab provides individual, personal
instruction for students with specific writing problems.
Instructors teach basic skills, organizational patterns and
individual refinements of writing styles. Note: Units offered may

ENGL-153 ESL College Reading and Writing
(3 units lecture) Grade Only An advanced study for ESL
students to gain confidence in college-level grammar, reading,
and writing skills. Written work progresses from brief essays
to college-level essays based on critical reading. The grammar
segment emphasizes second language errors, which students
learn to identify and correct. This course is not transferable
to a four-year university. Prerequisite: ENGL-350 or ENGL-353
Corequisite: ENGL-150L
ENGL-350 Reading and Writing Skills
(5 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option A pre-collegiate competency-
based course emphasizing the acquisition and integration of
basic academic reading and writing skills. Students develop
reading strategies necessary for simple academic reading and
write extended formal paragraphs and basic expository essays.
Prerequisite: GS-360 or Assessment for ENGL-350 ENGL-350L;
Corequisite: ENGL-350L
ENGL-350L Reading and Writing Skills - Lab
(1 unit lab) CR/NC only Guided practice in the development of
basic reading and writing skills. Students receive instruction
in reading strategies, in writing, and in sentence skills.
Essential tutorial support and other resources for ENGL 350
assignments are provided. Corequisite: ENGL-350
ENGL-353 ESL Reading and Writing Skills
(5 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option A basic study in written
communication and reading skills designed for second
language students. Class instruction will emphasize the
fundamentals of English grammar, sentence structure,
punctuation, standard English usage, as well as reading
comprehension. Written work progresses with integrated
readings from the paragraph through the short essay and
focuses on identifying and eliminating second language errors.
Prerequisite: GS-360 or Assessment for ENGL-353 ENGL-350L
