Course Descriptions
GS-1 College Success
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU Academic Success preparation
for the university-bound student. Students will learn how
to navigate the challenges of higher education by practicing
advanced reading, note and test-taking skills, higher-order
thinking, and academic research, while establishing college
and career paths and accessing the resources to support their
goals. Prerequisite: ENGL-150
GS-2 Strategies for Classroom Success - Learning Skills
(1 unit lecture) Grade Only CSU Part of a series of three mini-
courses designed to build both the academic and personal
strengths necessary for classroom success. Specifically
practical strategies for 1) assessing preparation, interests,
and commitments; 2) confirming and extending the basic
study skills of reading, note-taking, and test-taking to more
active, critical learning; 3) forming study, support groups; 4)
managing the increasing technology necessary for information
retrieval, writing, and computing required in college classes.
GS-3 Strategies for Classroom Success - Academic Planning
(1 unit lecture) Grade Only CSU Part of a series of three
mini-courses designed to build both the academic and
personal strengths necessary for classroom success. This
course specifically focuses on helping students explore
career interests, values and abilities; understand career and
education options; make satisfying career/education decisions;
and develop an education plan designed to maximize their
career success.
GS-4 Strategies for Classroom Success - Life Skills
(1 unit lecture) Grade Only CSU Part of a series of three mini-
courses designed to build both the academic and personal
strengths necessary for classroom success. This course focuses
on life skills introducing practical strategies for 1) assessing
personal values; 2) examining decision-making skills; 3)
managing stress; 4) managing family and other relationships
in the context of being a student; and 5) understanding and
appreciating the dynamics of an ethnic and gender diverse
student culture.
GS-5 Academic Research
(1 unit lecture) Grade Only CSU Introduction to academic
research skills and practice. Students will learn how to find,
evaluate, use, analyze, and correctly cite information sources
in print, electronic, and Internet formats. Students will learn
how to do the research required for term papers, speeches,
or presentations required by transfer level courses such as
English 1A or Speech 1. Recommended: ENGL-150
GS-150 Learning Success
(3 units lecture) Grade Only An introduction to the academic
and personal skills needed to succeed in college. Students
will learn how to manage time and classroom dynamics,
improve reading, note-taking, and test-taking skills, establish
an educational plan, generate critical responses to what they
read, see, and hear, and be introduced to the basic technology
required to find, evaluate, and use information of all kinds.
Corequisite: CIS-100 series
GS-360 Basic Academic Literacy
(6 units lecture/lab) CR/NC only Focus on basic reading, writing,
and academic skills for those students whose placement scores
indicate a need for additional preparation before moving into
developmental reading and writing coursework. Note: Students
are placed into this course based on Accuplacer reading and sentence
skills scores below entry placement for English 350.
GS-361 Basic Skills for Life, Work and College
(6 units lecture/lab) CR/NC only A course designed to help
students gain the confidence that comes from knowledge of
self and achievement to meet the challenges of life, work, and
college. Note: Students enrolling in this course are encouraged to
enroll in GS 360.
