Course Descriptions
HO-15 Nutrition
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A study of nutritional
needs across the life span, focusing on the basic nutrients
(including fats, carbohydrates, protein, minerals, vitamins,
water, and electrolytes), food sources, and nutrient utilization
in the human body. Emphasizes nutritional needs from
infancy to old age and during common life cycle occurrences
such as pregnancy, lactation, menopause, immobilization, and
surgery. Also includes applied and controversial aspects of
human nutrition.
HO-110 Basic Patient Care
(6 units lecture/lab) Grade Only A basic course in personal
care services and the maintenance of a safe and healthful
environment. Safety and asepsis are stressed. Prepares the
worker to function under the direction of a Licensed Nurse
in health agencies. Note: Student must pass physical examination
requirements for clinical work. Course completion will allow student
to take state certification exam.
HO-115 Introduction to Health Occupations
(2 units lecture) Grade Only An introduction to concepts and
issues in health care. This class will focus on socioeconomics
of health care, effects of illness, safety, communication,
ethical and legal frameworks, health maintenance, and career
planning. Note: Students must possess a social security number to
be eligible for State of CA required fingerprinting.
HO-158 First Responder Training
(1 unit lecture/lab) CR/NC option This training course is
developed in accordance with state and federal guidelines
for training in emergency medical care to those persons first
responding to a medical emergency. This course emphasizes
development of skills in patient assessment and treatment.

HO-159 Emergency Medical Technician I
(5 units lecture/lab) Grade Only A study of basic emergency
medicine to meet State of California requirements for EMT-I certification. Students will study and practice the
care of clients experiencing trauma and medical emergency
conditions. The focus of care includes assessment, stabilization,
treatment and transport of the critically ill and injured. This
course includes ride along, patient transport experience in
an ambulance service and observational experience in care of
medical and traumatic conditions in an emergency setting.
Note: Must be 18 years old to be eligible for state certification. May
take state certification exam within two years of course completion.
HO-161 Home Health Aide
(1.5 units lecture/lab) Grade Only Practice of the skills used by
a certified nursing assistant to provide basic care of clients
in their own homes. Upon course completion students
are eligible for State Certification as a Home Health Aide.
Prerequisite: HO-110 Note: Students must hold current California
certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
