PE-7 Step/Aerobics

PE-8A Beginning Golf

PE-8B Intermediate Golf
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments This course continues to emphasize golf skills, rules and etiquette. PE-10 Aerobic Fitness and Running

PE-11 Tennis
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments This course teaches the student all aspects of tennis skills including the forehand, backhand, serve, volley, lobs, and overhead. PE-12 Weight Training
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments A physical education course for the development of the body with the use of weights. Universal weight machines, dumbbells, fixed weights, and Olympic weights are used. Olympic weights are used by those who demonstrate knowledge of proper weight lifting skills. PE-14 Defensive Tactics
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments A course to learn protection against unarmed persons or those armed with dangerous and deadly weapons. PE-15 Women’s Self Defense
(1 unit lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Introduction to self-defense. Violence prevention education, assertiveness skills, and physical self defense techniques are taught and practiced. Note: This course is open to men and women of all fitness levels.

PE-16 Women’s Self-Defense and Aerobics
(2 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of two enrollments Introduction to a full spectrum of self-defense. Rape awareness and prevention education, assertiveness skills, and physical self-defense techniques are taught and practiced. A low impact aerobic workout provides the repetition necessary to master the physical fighting skills. Note: This course is open to men and women of all fitness levels.

PE-17 Aerobic Kickboxing
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments A study of the techniques of kickboxing and martial sports as the basis for aerobic exercise and strength training. Basic kicking, punching, and blocking techniques will be taught as well as footwork and combinations. PE-18 Pilates Mat
(1 unit lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments An introduction to Pilates Mat which focuses on breathing, posture, balance, strength, endurance, and flexibility. The Pilates exercises are performed on a mat and promote overall physical and mental well-being.

PE-20 Baseball
(1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments This course emphasizes the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, base running, team offense and defense, pitching and catching. The course is designed for students of all skill levels.

PE-21 Basketball

PE-22 Soccer

PE-23 Softball

PE-41A Beginning Swimming
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments Instruction for non-swimming students to gain proficiency in the elementary forms of swimming. A beginning swimmer will learn to float on back, swim in deep water, overcome fear, correct breathing problems, and swim across pool. Note: Units offered may vary by semester. PE-41B Intermediate Swimming
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments Instruction of students in the proficiency skills of intermediate swimming, endurance, and proper body mechanics which will facilitate smooth, efficient performance and increased appreciation of swimming. PE-41C Advanced Swimming
(1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments Instruction for the advanced swimmer, emphasizing swim conditioning, skill advancement, and life- saving techniques. PE-43 Aquatic Fitness
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments This course will help to teach cardiovascular conditioning and fitness by using the competitive aspects of swimming and specifically designed scaled workouts to fit each ability level. PE-44 Water Polo
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments A course emphasizing the fundamental skills of individual and team play of water polo. PE-46 Lifeguard Training
(2 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Training which will provide the student with a Lifeguard Training Certificate, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid Certification, Community Water Safety Certification, and Certificates for Head Lifeguard and Waterfront Lifeguard, which qualifies participants as non-surf lifeguards. Note: This training should be supplemented with training by the employer which is specific to the facility. Students must demonstrate proficiency in front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and underwater swimming.

PE-47 Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
(3 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Training designed to certify the student to teach infant and preschool aquatic lessons, Longfellow’s Whale Tales educational program and progressive swimming courses (Level I - VII). The student will be familiar with safety training for swim coaches, Waddles Aquacktic Safety, and be certified to work in other Red Cross instructional programs through the instructor Candidate Training module (ICT). Note: Students must demonstrate proficiency in front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and underwater swimming.

PE-50 Intercollegiate Baseball
(2 units lab) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of two enrollments A course designed to provide the student with competitive baseball experience on the intercollegiate level. Note: Must meet all eligibility requirements of State Athletic Code for participation.

PE-51 Intercollegiate Basketball - Women

PE-60 Foundations of Recreational Studies
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A course covering the development of the recreational field, evaluation of current programs and interpretation of recreation as a valid form of community activities. The role of the professional in various settings is identified.

PE-61 Recreational Leadership
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to the dynamics of leadership in recreation programs. Emphasis is on developing and establishing a definition of leadership and management and the identification of organizational structures. The role of the recreation leader in working with groups and techniques for motivation, communication and problem solving are included. Trends and issues confronting recreation leaders for the future are explored.

PE-64 Concepts of Weight Training
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A course covering the scientific basis of weight training with an emphasis on designing weight training programs. Upon completion, the student will be able to understand how the body responds and adapts to weight training.

PE-65 Introduction to Physical Education
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to Physical Education and Recreation and a study of their nature and significance in our modern society. Included will be topics relevant to careers, historical background, and current trends. (CAN KINE/PE2)

PE-66 Concepts of Physical Education and Exercise
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introductory course covering physical fitness exercise programs, health, physical fitness testing, rehabilitation of injuries and body mechanics. The course also covers diet and nutrition related to athletic performance and weight control.

PE-67 Theory of Football
(1 unit lecture) CR/NC option CSU and UC Repeatable to a maximum of two enrollments This course is for students interested in learning the theory of different offensive and defensive philosophies. Students will study and evaluate these differences through lecture, film, and video tape.

PE-68 Care and Prevention of Sports Injuries
(2.5 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU and UC A course in the care and prevention of sports injuries. The course covers: causes of sports injuries, recognition and care of injuries, therapeutic modalities, principles of rehabilitation, and taping techniques.

PE-71 Officiating Basketball
(1 unit lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC This course combines theory and practice in a study of scoring methods, timing procedures, statistical analysis, rules, and techniques used in officiating men’s and women’s high school and college basketball.

PE-72 Officiating Baseball/Softball
(1 unit lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC This course combines theory and practice in a study of the scoring methods and techniques of officiating baseball and softball.

PE-75 American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer Exam Preparation
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU A course providing students with the resources necessary to understand and apply the important concepts required for taking and passing the ACE Personal Trainer Exam. Students taking this course are expected to have a basic knowledge of the muscular system, cardiovascular system, exercise science, nutrition, strength training, cardiovascular training, and flexibility training.

PE-78 Individual Fitness
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments An activity class in which the student establishes a contract with the instructor to attend regularly scheduled P.E. classes and fulfill certain attendance and performance standards. This course is appropriate for students desiring late entry into a Physical Education activity class and for students with schedule conflicts which do not allow them to complete their fitness program within a regular P.E. class schedule. Note: Consent of instructor is required for enrollment.

PE-80 Athletic Conditioning

PE-90 Adaptive Physical Education

PE-93 Adaptive Aquatic Swimming

PE-302 Adapted Conditioning
(0.5 - 1 unit lab) CR/NC only Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments An introduction to conditioning for students with a disability. Emphasis is placed on toning of muscles, ranging of joints, increased flexibility and stress awareness/ control. This course is designed primarily for the student with disabilities but may also be useful to individuals who are non- disabled who lack the strength and endurance to keep up with the rigors of a regular PE class.
