Course Descriptions
RT-1 Introduction to Television Production
(4 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU A “hands on” introduction
exploring all aspects of writing, producing, and directing
programs for television. Students will produce live and
videotaped programs designed for use by the college for
instructional purposes. In addition, they will cover live sports
events for broadcast over cable television. Recommended:
ENGL-150/150L Note: Students should be familiar with computers
and/or be able to demonstrate computer competence and the ability to
surf the web.
RT-2 Television Production
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Continuing study for
the student interested in pursuing a career in commercial or
non-commercial television. Students will produce and direct
various individual projects along with programs designed
for inclusion on local cable TV channels, gain experience
in directing programs for CR Distance Learning programs,
and produce and direct television features about various
community events. Prerequisite: RT-1
RT-3 Film Style Field Television Production
(4 units lecture/lab) CR/NC option CSU A study of the aesthetic
considerations and technical practices of field production.
Students will learn basic single camera film style production
techniques including storyboarding, shot chart development,
field lighting, sound capture, post-editing considerations,
problem solving and associated terminologies.
RT-4 Advanced Film Style Field Television Production
(3 units lab) CR/NC option CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
two enrollments An advanced practice of the technical and
aesthetic aspects of field production. Students will learn basic,
single-camera film-style production techniques including
storyboarding, shot chart development, field lighting, sound
capture, post-editing considerations, problem- solving, and
associated terminologies. Prerequisite: RT-3
RT-5 Introduction to Narrative and Broadcast Screenwriting
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU An introduction to the
concepts and structure of screenwriting and broadcast news
presentations. Emphasis is placed on the development of the
initial story idea into a viable, professional shooting script
for television or film. Additionally, students learn to write,
re-write and edit stories using computers, incorporate sound
tracks and visuals into stories.
RT-6 Introduction to Video Editing
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Introduction to the
concepts of digital video. In this hands-on course, students
work in a multimedia computer lab to capture, create, and edit
video files to be used in film and video productions. Students
will use VHS and Hi8 hardware and an encoding capture card
to translate video from analog to digital formats and then use
non-linear editing software to manipulate and enhance digital
video clips.
RT-7 Television Directing
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU Techniques and theories
of television production and direction for both film style
and multi-camera usage. Preproduction considerations of
storyboarding, shot selection, scheduling, location scouting,
cast and crew assemblage, rehearsals, and blocking will be
presented. Mis-en-seine vs. montage directing techniques and
post-editing concerns will be addressed for both in-studio and
field productions.
RT-8L Advanced Television and Video Production Lab
(2 units lab) Grade Only CSU Repeatable to a maximum of
two enrollments An advanced practice of the aesthetic
considerations and technical practices of in-studio and
field television/video production. Students will engage in
fine tuning production techniques including visualization,
storyboarding, elements of continuity style, composing
shots and spatial connections, shot chart development, field
lighting, sound capture, post-editing considerations, problem
solving and the collaborative process. Prerequisite: RT-2 or RT-4
