SOC-1 Introduction to Sociology
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC An introduction to the
discipline of sociology including major theories, concepts and
methods in the study of society. It includes social structure,
social interaction, culture, social groups, social stratification,
social deviance, social change, and social policy implications.
Recommended: ENGL-150
SOC-2 Social Problems
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC This course includes
the identification and analysis of social problems from a
sociological perspective and the introduction and application
of the sociological concepts to the analysis of social problems.
Major sociological theoretical perspectives regarding social
problems and differing problem solving approaches will be
examined. (CAN SOC4)
SOC-3 Human Sexuality
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC This course provides
a comprehensive introduction to the biological, psychosocial,
behavioral, and cultural aspects of sexuality. The approach is
both academic and self-help problem solving.
SOC-5 Introduction to Race and Ethnic Relations
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC This course will
examine the nature of racial and ethnic relations in American
society especially as these relationships interface with the
dominant culture. A comparative sociological and historical
approach will be used to analyze the experiences of Asians,
American Indians, Blacks, and Chicanos from colonial times to
the present.
SOC-6 Women in Contemporary Society
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU and UC This course
is an introduction to the study of roles, functions, and
consciousness of women in the U.S. and other countries from
a sociological perspective. It will concentrate on analyzing the
relationships of women to fundamental economic and social
institutions, gender-related problems such as basic interactions
between males and females with regard to the above subject,
and the effect of mass media on women of different classes,
ages, and ethnic groups.
SOC-10 Marriage and the Family
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU An examination of changing
family forms, particularly in the United States, including
marriage, cohabitation, single-parent and extended families.
This course will include an examination of gender roles,
sexual expression, parenting, ethnicity, domestic violence,
communication, divorce and remarriage. Recommended:

SOC-33 Death: The Inevitable Crisis
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU This course provides for a
discussion of the cultural, social, and emotional values and
behaviors surrounding death. The primary areas that will be
explored include the definition of death, euthanasia, suicide,
the process of dying, children and death, bereavement, and
the funeral industry.
SOC-34 Introduction to Social Work
(3 units lecture) Grade Only CSU An introduction to the central
ideas, values and methods of social work studied from the
perspective of historical background and contemporary
fields of service. The general method of social work will be
introduced. Human diversity is emphasized. Recommended:

SOC-38 Field Experience
(3 units lecture/lab) Grade Only CSU An integration of social
service theory with supervised field work experience
emphasizing developing skills, understanding agency
organization, and building a knowledge base regarding social
needs and problems. The student may volunteer or seek
paid employment in a community or campus social service
agency. Note: Field trips are required. The College does not provide
transportation.
