SPAN-1A Elementary Spanish
(4 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU and UC A beginning course that presents the fundamentals of Spanish and provides the tools for students to acquire elementary linguistic proficiency. The course emphasizes the communicative use of all language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Special emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Note: This course is not appropriate for students who have taken and passed two or more years of Spanish within the past three years.

SPAN-1B Elementary Spanish
(4 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A continuation of Spanish 1A, this course presents the fundamentals of Spanish and provides the tools for students to improve linguistic proficiency. The course emphasizes the communicative use of all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Special emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Note: This course is not appropriate for students who have taken and passed three or more years of Spanish within the past three years. Prerequisite: SPAN-1A

SPAN-2A Intermediate Spanish
(4 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A study in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish at the intermediate level with emphasis on spoken Spanish and increasing attention to reading and writing. It includes a grammar review and vocabulary expansion exercises and appreciation of the diverse Hispanic cultures. Prerequisite: SPAN-1B (CAN SPAN8)

SPAN-2B Intermediate Spanish
(4 units lecture) Grade Only CSU and UC A continuation of SPAN-2A. It includes understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish at the intermediate level with emphasis on spoken Spanish and increasing attention to reading and writing. It expands appreciation and knowledge of the diverse Hispanic cultures. Course emphasis is on culturally authentic reading and writing, along with continued development of listening/speaking competencies. Prerequisite: SPAN-2A (CAN SPAN10)

SPAN-8A Elementary Conversational Spanish
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU Designed to develop oral communication skills. Emphasis on increasing vocabulary; improving listening comprehension; mastering pronunciation, accuracy, and grammar control. This course will help students expand their oral proficiency at the elementary level through a variety of personalized situations that progress from easy to more complex open-ended conversations. The course reinforces spontaneity and intuition as a natural response while immersing the students in the Hispanic cultures. Prerequisite: SPAN-1A Recommended: SPAN-1B

SPAN-11A Beginning Conversational Spanish
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU A beginning course in conversational Spanish that emphasizes pronunciation, vocabulary building, and speaking. Students acquire elementary linguistic proficiency through situational practice. The concepts and vocabulary presented are designed to be useful in routine communication with Spanish speakers. Additional emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Note: This course is not appropriate for students who have taken and passed two or more years of Spanish within the past three years.

SPAN-11B Beginning Conversational Spanish
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU A continuation of Spanish 11A that emphasizes pronunciation, vocabulary building, and speaking. Students improve elementary linguistic proficiency through situational practice. The concepts and vocabulary presented are designed to be useful in routine communication with Spanish speakers. Additional emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish- speaking world. Note: This course is not appropriate for students who have taken and passed two or more years of Spanish within the past three years. Prerequisite: SPAN-11A

SPAN-12A Intermediate Spanish Conversation
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU An intermediate course in conversational Spanish designed for students who are familiar with the basic structures of the Spanish language but need to improve their communicative abilities. Past and future constructions are introduced and used in situational practice, with emphasis on pronunciation, vocabulary building, and speaking. Additional emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Prerequisite: SPAN-11B

SPAN-12B Intermediate Spanish Conversation
(3 units lecture) CR/NC option CSU A continuation of Spanish 12A. Present, past, future, conditional, and subjunctive constructions are used in situational practice, with emphasis on pronunciation, vocabulary building, and speaking. Additional emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Prerequisite: SPAN-12A
