Gamma Rho History
Find out how it all began for the CR Gamma Rho Chapter.
Welcome past, present, and future members of the Gamma Rho chapter of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honors Society! In December of 2000, thirteen students at the College of the Redwoods formed the Gamma Rho chapter. Shortly thereafter the state AGS secretary, Dr. Brad Reynolds, traveled up to redwood country from Los Angeles to christen the new organization. That spring, some of the members attended their first state AGS conference and helped to put the Gamma Rho chapter on the map. By the spring of 2001, the society was off and running with 37 members. Today, the organization stands as one of the most important and influential student groups on the CR campus.
AGS is both an academic and a service organization. The students have initiated a number of exciting community service projects in recent semesters including: beach cleanups, landscaping projects at the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, sponsoring guest speakers on campus, a team in the Relay for Life fundraiser, dunes restoration, CR Wine Auction volunteers, and Adopting-a-Highway. The students are also planning a number of exciting future projects, including some special activities in honor of women's history month.
In addition to the pride in giving back to one's community, AGS offers other privileges to its members. The state organization provides several lucrative scholarships for members achieving high academic standards as well as for members active in community service projects. All members receive a special notation on their transcripts that universities around the nation recognize as a symbol of student excellence. Participating students also gain leadership and social skills and can receive letters of recommendation from the organization's advisors.
I would like to encourage interested students to join the organization and commend those students who are currently members for their commitment to community service and academic achievement. Here's to a fruitful, productive, and fun semester!
Sincerely,
Dr. George Potamianos
