Mj welcomed visitors, Yannick Nadeau and Will Bertain, to the group and everyone introduced themselves.

Kyle Bigham and Patrick Cross were elected as 1st Vice President and 2nd Vice President respectively.

Consent Calendar:

Action items approved.

1.      Mj explains the procedure in approving the consent calendar.

2.      Mj explains what the action items are.

a.      The GPA increase to 3.3 cumulative and per semester will apply to everyone next fall semester; however, initial members will need to have a 3.3 GPA starting in the spring semester.  The increased GPA requirement will help AGS gain the much deserved respect from CR administration. We will also have a better chance at receiving funds from CR if we meet the college's minimum standards for honors.

President's Report:

2.3    Mj was asked by Ahn Fielding to form an AGS team for the upcoming CASA Kid Walk event on October 18.

a.        The 1st annual event is a ½ -mile walk through Old Town, Eureka to raise awareness and funds for CASA of Humboldt County.

b.        We currently have six people on our team, and we will be selling candy bars as our fundraiser. Ahn has designed the labels for the candy bars.

2.4    Mj reminded continuing members to submit membership materials into the AGS mailbox by October 17 (i.e. spring/summer grades, receipt of payment, and proof of registration).

2.5    We will be hosting a membership drive in September to recruit new members.

a.        We need more members to help out with booth sitting.

b.        There will be two bake sales held during the membership drive on Sept. 11 & 29.

2.6    The Trinity River Rafting trip we ventured out on in June was a trip well worth a repeat. We should make this an annual event.

2.7    The Relay For Life event was a success for Humboldt County and AGS.

a.        Even though CR has hosted the event since its inception in 1991, the AGS team, "Gamma Rays", was the FIRST team from CR to partake in the event!  Yowza.

b.        The Gamma Rays walked 72.5 miles, nearly $1,600, and earned 3rd place in the Spirit Award out of 500 teams.

c.         Congratulations to Diane (~$300) and Patrick (~$200) who raised the most money.

d.        Thanks to Mj and Kathleen who earned the most spirit beads for the team.

2.8    At the Humboldt County Fair in August, Gamma Rho shared table space with CR's Bianchi Farm crew to promote CR, AGS, and the organic agriculture Bianchi Farm.

a.        Thanks to all who volunteered to work the exhibit.  As it turned out, AGS devoted the most time at the fair. We had 33 inquiries about AGS during the fair.

1st Vice President's Report:

3.1  Kyle shared his goals to increase fundraising efforts.

2nd Vice President's Report:

4.1  Patrick shared his goals to increase membership and promote fun events.

Treasurer's Report:

5.2    We have about $450.00 in our account.  This amount does not reflect pending printing, state dues, or AGS banner costs.

Secretary's Report:

6.3    Charlotte wasn't to proud of her past record in getting the minutes and agenda out in time, so she has set a goal for the new semester to disseminate materials in a timely fashion.

a.        She will also try to keep the website more up to date.

Advisor's Report:

7.1  George gave a warm welcome encouraging students to join AGS.

I.C.C. Rep's Report:

8.2    We have done more service work than PTK, but they still get funding.

a.        Mj says if PTK remains inactive for another year then AGS has a chance to take over their line in CR's budget. While it is too early to approach administration with budget funding, Mj suggests the advisors meet with Dr. Bobbit next year.

Newsletter Editor's Report:

9.1    Margaret has met with Diana, the outgoing Newsletter Editor, and received files from the previous newsletters.  However, the files are in a different format, so she will have to start from scratch in Word. The Word format will make the transition easier for future newsletter editors.

a.        So far Margaret has received the following articles: 4H Trails, Humboldt County Fair, Editor's corner, River rafting trip, AGS calendar, and Adopt-A-Highway.

b.        Her goal is to have the newsletter done by Wed. at 5pm.  Deadline for submittals is Wed. at 4pm.

c.         It is our goal to have a monthly newsletter.

d.        Margaret welcomes comments and suggestions on the newsletter

Webmaster's Report:

11.1    Updates have been made but not uploading to the site yet.

Members-At-Large:

11.2    Kathleen inquired about the Mendocino's interest in a co-chapter on their campus.

a.      In June, Mj sent emails to people that were interested but has not received a response.

Announcements:

12.1    August 31 - Adopt-A-Highway cleanup at 12pm

12.2    September 1 - set up display in forum breezeway at 10am

President's Report:

2.1    Mj was approached by Julie Gordon, Admin. Assist. Division Chairs Office, during the membership drive and asked if AGS would sell refreshments for CR's Science Night on Oct. 24 from 5pm-10pm.  The event is well attended by the community and student body, so it is a great opportunity to raise money for AGS.  The event committee is only looking for one student organization to sell refreshements.

a.     AGS can set up a table near the Physical Science building and sell baked goods and drinks. We could sell the drinks left over from the Women's Herstory Month event and ask for additional donations for hot beverages.

b.     Margaret mentioned that the Forestry & Natural Resources Club has sold hot beverages for the event in the past, but their table is set up in the AT building.  She has not heard of their interest for this year's Science Night.

2.2    The California Coastal Cleanup event will be on Sept. 20 from 9am-12pm.  Please arrive at 8:45am.  AGS will be cleaning the area under the Ferndale Bridge and along the Eel River.  By cleaning the two locations, AGS can get cleanup recognition from CalTrans Adopt-A-Highway and Northcoast Environmental Center.  Let Mj know if you want to join us in the cleanup.

a.     Margaret asks if there will be a dumpster available.  The coastal cleanup coordinators, North Coast Environmental Center, will not be supplying us with a dumpster because this is a special site that Mj developed and was able to get added on to the list of cleanup sites.  However, we will be issued free dump passes to dispose of trash.

2.3    CASA KidWalk will be on Oct. 18 from 11am - 4pm.  KidWalk teams will walk ½ mile from the Old Town Gazebo in Eureka to the Adorni Center.  At the Adorni Center there will be food, music, information booths, rides, and a guest lecturer.

a.     In the team member packets, there is a challenge sheet for members to challenge other individuals / groups to form a team for the KidWalk.

b.     Before the meeting, team members gathered for a team photo for the Gamma Rho Play-Doh team webpage.

c.    Team members should set a goal of (10) $10 sponsorships from people.  The intent is for each member to raise at least $100 to help cover the cost of training CASA volunteers. It costs $1,000 to train a CASA volunteer for a year.

d.     Mj will set up a team meeting to get information out to team members.  This year's event is dedicated in memory of Carole Sund, a founding member of CASA-Humboldt.

2.4    Once again, the deadline for turning in membership paperwork is Oct. 17 at 5:00pm.

a.    Staple your spring/summer grades, dues receipt, and current registration together.  Turn it all into the AGS mailbox in FM 200.

b.    Yippee, we have another new member!

2.5    Mj announced that Casey Crabill, College of the Redwoods President, is stepping in as the new PTK advisor; hence, PTK will be able to retain their line in the budget even though it may be a conflict of interest that the President of the college is the advisor for the PTK chapter.

a.    We can get a list of CR students with a 3.0 GPA and above if we get the advisor's to fill out a work request; however, DataTel is having problems printing out the list.

b.    Mj wants everyone to know that students can still join AGS even if they are members of PTK or the Honors Program.

1st Vice President's Report:

3.2    Kyle announced that CostCo will donate baked goods and/or money to local organizations.

a.    In order to solicit a donation, AGS will need to submit a letter stating information about our organization and needs. Letters are accepted every month with monetary donations of up to $250/month being awarded.  The deadline for submitting letters is the 1st-2nd week of each month organization requesting monetary donations.  Requests for baked goods can be up to a week before the event.

2nd Vice President's Report:

4.1   Our membership table/bake sale for Sept. 11 was promising (over $200) although the money hasn't been tallied yet.  Mj will email the results when the money is counted.  There were several inquiries into AGS.

4.2   The next membership table will be on Sept. 17 and it will be for informational purposes only; however, we will be selling CASA candy bars for $1

Treasurer's Report:

5.1    We have collected $50 in dues.

Secretary's Report:

No report.

Advisor's Report (Justine):

7.1   AGS is getting recognized on campus and hopefully we can get PTK's line in the budget.  Mj updated everyone on PTK's status (see 2.5).

I.C.C. Rep's Report:

No report.

Newsletter Editor's Report:

9.1   Margaret has been barraged with problems in getting the newsletter finished. There have been problems with software. The PDF version of the newsletter looks good with a few conversion differences.

a.        Margaret hopes to have the issue to printing services by the end of the week.

9.2    Now that Kyle is the 1st Vice President, Margaret will be reporting to him for final approval.

a.        Margaret wants members to put "October issue" in the subject line so she can quickly retrieve it from her e-mail.

Webmaster's Report:

No report.

Members-At-Large:

11.2    Poll workers are still needed to work the A.S.C.R. election booths. Contact Patrick if you are interested in working the election booth.  There will be monetary compensation for working.  However, don't forget if you're scheduled to work the membership table on Sept. 23rd.

Announcements:

12.1    September 17, 23, 29- Membership Drives; Bake Sale the 29th in front of LRC from 10am-6pm

12.2    September 20 - CA Coastal Cleanup Day from 9am-12pm under the Ferndale Bridge

Approved.

Roundtable introductions.

Guest Speaker: Jessica Pierce, Food For People, Inc. (FFP)

  1. FFP background: FFP started providing food boxes for people and food pantries in 1978. They currently help 10,000 people/month with food and other assistance; however, they are serving more people due to recent budget cuts. FFP also provides 20 other programs designed to help people become more self-sufficient and healthy. They also work on legislation regarding community assistance.

  2. At a previous meeting, AGS members agreed to participate in the annual FFP food drive. We can situate food barrels on campus and FFP will collect the food. FFP is attempting to raise $40,000 over the holidays in food/money. For every 2.5# of food raised, $1 will be added to the fundraising pot.

  3. FFL will be having an open house on 10/23 from 5-7pm.

  4. Jessica read that 30% of Humboldt County residents are food insecure, meaning that they go to bed with hunger pains.

2 - President's Report:

2.1      Autumn Vintage Wine Auction Gala (AVWAG) is on Nov. 8 from 5pm-11pm and again on Sunday from 8:30am-11am for the after party cleanup.

a.         This is an annual CR fundraiser for the Northcoast Hospitality Institute in Arcata.

b.         Members are needed to help showcase the auction items on Saturday (must be 21 or over) and to help with cleanup on Sunday morning (we will receive $50 for cleanup if we have a minimum of 6 people). AGS will get their choice of shifts. This event requires formal dress. Members can invite their significant others to help us out, but members will do the showcasing.

c.         Members agreed to participate in Saturday night's events as their prime choice.

2.2      Science Night will be Oct. 24 from 5-10pm with about 15 instructors hosting activities in the Life Science, Physical Science, and Applied Technology buildings.

a.         Diqui announced that docents are needed to help people find the different activities. Docents will receive an orientation. Members interested in being a docent should contact Mj Goble, and she will submit a list of names to Michelle Green. Mj will get posters of the event to post in our display.

b.         AGS will be hosting a refreshments table in the Physical Science building. Diqui heard that the Math & Science club was going to be selling refreshments as well. Mj will check into it because she was told that only one organization was being selected to sell refreshments, and AGS has already been approved.

i. We could work the table in shifts. Kyle will coordinate CostCo baked good donation.

ii. For drinks, we can use sodas left over from the Women's Herstory month event and water donated by Kathleen.

iii. Mj will check with Pepsi Corp. about getting drink donations.

iv. We don't have a hot water container for hot drinks, but we will check with CostCo. If anyone can find one to donate for Science Night, it would be appreciated.

2.3      Mj has ordered the CASA KidWalk T-shirts and expects them in next week.

a.         There is a team meeting @ CASA (2356 Myrtle Ave., Eureka) on Oct. 11 from 4-5pm.

b.         Jason Beaver, Kid Walk coordinator, will be present to show a video and give information.

c.         Deadline for turning donation money into Mj is Oct. 15 by 1pm.

2.4      Reminder for continuing members to get paperwork turned in by Friday, Oct. 17 at 5pm.

2.5      Gamma Rho HAS to attend the Regional Fall Conference in Madera on Oct. 24-25.

a.         If Gamma Rho does not attend this conference then we will NOT be in good standing with the state. The AGS chapter will NOT be able to compete for scholarships at the spring state conference as a result.

b.         The fall conference is hosted by Reedley College.

c.         Continuing members are invited to attend the conference.

d.         AGS will pay for registration fees; however, each attending member will be financially responsible for lodging and meals. Lunch will be provided at the conference.

e.         We need at least 1 member and 1 advisor to attend. We would leave Friday afternoon and return late Saturday night. George has offered to use his car for driving and will attend the conference as well.

2.6      CA Coastal Cleanup Day was a huge success.

i. All members who participated received a Coastal Cleanup T-shirt. Mj passed around two letters of recognition from Nita Brake-Mills, Caltrans A-A-H Coordinator and Gerald Kingsfather, Humboldt Waste Authority.

3 - 1st Vice President's Report:

Mj spoke on Kyle's behalf.

3.1      CostCo donates goods to Jefferson Elementary School. Kyle feels it would be a good gesture for AGS to take some kids on a tour of the Bianchi organic farm to pick pumpkins for Halloween.

4 - 2nd Vice President's Report:

4.1      We have 19 members right now.

a.         The deadline will be extended to Oct. 31 for students who show interest in the organization when we host the Science Night table.

4.2      We've raised about $311 from the two bake sales.

a.         Patrick thanked everyone for working the membership/bake sale tables and baking goodies.

5 - Treasurer's Report:

5.1      We have $375 from dues so far.

6 - Secretary's Report:

6.1      Charlotte has made 2 versions of a letterhead for AGS correspondence

a.         Mj will e-mail members the letterheads for members to vote on which letterhead they want us to use officially.

6.2      Members voted to keep the officer business card design as is.

7 - Advisor's Report:

7.1      Diqui talked about Science Night under the President's Report.

8 - I.C.C. Rep.'s Report:

Jared had no report.

  1. Patrick mentioned that there will be an ASCR meeting in the boardroom on Oct. 10 starting at 1pm.

9 - Newsletter Editor's Report:

9.1      Margaret has finished the Sept. newsletter, and Mj passed around the issue.

9.2      Article deadline for the Oct. issue is this weekend, Oct. 5.

10 - Webmaster's Report:

10.1       Charlotte has updated the website.

a.       The home page will reflect the date and pages of the last two updates.

b.       The service points have not been updated. Hopefully, Mj will tally the points this weekend.

11 - Members-at-large:

11.2       Patrick inquired about Permanent Membership status.

a.       In order to become a permanent member you need to have completed 60 units and have a 3.5 GPA.

b.       You need to apply for permanent membership, but the state does not supply applications.

c.       Each chapter is responsible for creating and providing their own permanent membership application.

d.       Mj will tackle the application during the winter break.

e.       Kathleen asked about the benefits of permanent membership. According to state bylaws, you get a certificate and pin.
