Overview

College of the Redwoods encourages all faculty members, full-time and associate, to commit to lifelong learning. Part of how we reach this goal is through our participation in the “Flexible Calendar Program,” which allows us to replace a specific number of instructional days per year with opportunities for faculty participation in professional-growth activities. August 23, 24, 25, and 26, 2006, and January 20, 2007 , are all “Staff Development Days” on our 2006-2007 academic calendar.

Although the academic year has been shortened by five days, both full-time and associate faculty are paid as though they were teaching on those five days. Faculty members, therefore, have the obligation to engage in activities designed to achieve instructional improvement, staff improvement, or student improvement.

Each year we are asked to state our professional growth goals; then we participate in workshops, seminars, conferences, teleconferences, and other activities to meet those annual goals. This year’s professional-growth obligation for full-time faculty is 35 hours; it is 45 minutes per TLU for associate faculty.

Committee work related to the development of student-learning outcomes and program review also qualifies as a staff-development activity, if stated in one’s goals. The topics addressed in the district-wide activities made available on August 23 and 24 and in the campus meetings on August 25 may qualify as professional growth activities, if they relate to your stated goals. (Senators and committee chairs who attended the Senate Retreat on August 26 may also count the time they spent in attendance, again if it was related to their goals.) In addition, the CTE schedules staff-development workshops throughout the year.

Associate faculty can fulfill staff-development activities through any of the methods above or by scheduling and holding office hours through-out the semester (that is, if your goals relate to increasing communication with students.) For each two office hours, you may count one hour towards your total staff-development obligation.

We are required by Title 5, Sections 55726, 55728, and 55730, to certify our compliance with the Flexible Calendar Program to the System (Chancellor’s) Office. We have developed a Staff Development Contract, which will be kept in an electronic format in Public Folders under Faculty Information - StaffDevelFrm. You may complete the Staff Development Contract on your computer throughout the year and submit it electronically. Full-time faculty must submit their completed contracts by May 11, 2007 . Associate faculty must submit their contracts each semester: December 8, 2006 , and May 11, 2007 .

Because there will be a random audit of Staff Development Contracts, all faculty are urged to maintain a log of staff-development-eligible activities attended or completed and to keep a file of material to substantiate completion of staff development activities that are not a part of the formally organized workshops.

We have established a Staff Development Committee comprised of Carol Mathews, Kerry Mayer, Heather Ault, Sally Frazier, Maureen Scott, and me. This committee will ask you to identify training needs so that the CTE can offer training and workshops that meet your needs. We also ask that you complete the evaluation forms supplied at the end of any campus workshops to assist us in meeting your staff-development needs.

To ensure that all members of the faculty clearly understand their staff- development obligation and how to correctly complete the Staff Development Contract, the Staff Development Committee has set up a training in the CTE on Monday, October 16, 2006 , from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Thanks for helping us meet both your staff-development needs and our legal requirements. If you have any questions about how to meet your staff development obligation, please call me at 476-4174.

FAQs

What is "Staff-Development” credit?

Staff-Development credit is the state’s way of insuring that faculty engage in professional-development activities equivalent to the amount of time that they would have spent in class were there no Staff-Development program. One hour of time spent on professional development equals one hour of Staff-Development credit.

What determines allowable “Staff-Development” credit?

Each faculty member is asked to set his or her professional development goals each year. Staff, student and instructional improvement activities addressing these goals can be counted toward staff development credit.

What are “Staff-Development” days?

As allowed by Title 5, Staff-Development Days (called Flex Days on our calendar) are days set aside in the calendar for professional development rather than for meeting with classes. College of the Redwoods has five Staff-Development Days (a total of 35 hours for full-time faculty) for 2006-07.

What kinds of activities are considered "Staff-Development" activities?

The term "Staff-Development" includes activities that increase knowledge in the discipline or that directly enhance teaching skills. It also includes activities that improve working relationships with students and staff in and out of the classroom as well as activities that enhance an individual’s physical and mental ability to perform his or her job.

Do all professional activities have to occur on certain days?

No, but for accountability purposes, certain days are labeled “Flex Days” on the academic calendar. However, attendance on these designated days, for which Staff-Development credit is given, may be required by the district.

What options are available for satisfying the hours of my “Staff-Development” obligation?

Faculty may satisfy this obligation through a variety of professional activities: You can attend workshops or programs offered on campus throughout the academic year. You can attend off-campus workshops and conferences. The maximum Staff-Development credit for a single day is seven hours. You can design your own individual or group activities with the approval of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

What kinds of individual or group activities are acceptable for “Staff-Development” credit?

Any activities that result in faculty, student, or instructional improvement are acceptable such as:

  • Major design or redesign of courses
  • Subject area research and course update
  • New course/program development
  • Development of new materials for use in course/program evaluation
  • Exploration of alternate instructional methods
  • Review of library and media holdings
  • Assessment of community needs and preferences as they relate to instruction at the community college
  • Academic projects involving student groups

You mean we can design our own activities for “Staff-Development” credit?

Yes. If you wish to receive credit for an individual or group activity, please develop your own Individual/Group Staff-Development Activity Proposal and submit it to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs for approval.

How much “Staff-Development” credit do I earn if I present or facilitate an activity?

Individual presenters and individual workshop organizers of on-campus Staff-Development activities earn triple Staff-Development credit. For example, if you present a three-hour activity, you will receive nine hours of Staff-Development credit. Multiple presenters and brown-bag facilitators earn double credit.

When can I earn “Staff-Development” credit?

You may earn Staff-Development credit during any non-duty hours (hours during which you are not fulfilling your CRFO contract obligations) throughout the fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

How do I calculate “Staff-Development” if I am taking a course for college credit?

A course for college credit is calculated as 15 hours per credit multiplied times three (a Carnegie unit). A one credit course equals 45 hours for “Staff-Development” credit.

What about associate faculty?

College of the Redwoods expects associate faculty to complete 45 minutes of Staff-Development activities for each TLU worked. They are welcome to attend any scheduled activities.

What about nonteaching faculty?

Nonteaching faculty contracts do not include Flex Days, so they are not required to complete a Staff-Development contract.

How does the college keep track of faculty “Staff-Development” credits?

All full-time faculty must submit their completed forms to Mary Miller (mary-miller@redwoods.edu) in the Academic Affairs Office by May 11, 2007. Associate faculty must submit their contracts by December 8, 2006, and May 11, 2007.

If you have plans to attend a later training to fulfill your Staff-Development contract and will not have your obligation completed by these dates, you must notify the Academic Affairs Office by memo.  All Staff-Development credit must be completed by June 30, 2007.

What happens if I am sick or have a personal emergency on a mandatory day?

If you cannot attend a mandatory on-campus day, it will be treated as a sick day or a personal holiday--just as though you were not teaching on that day.

What are my “Staff-Development” obligations if I am on sabbatical leave or pre-retirement reduced work load?

If you are on a semester sabbatical, your Staff-Development obligation is 17.5 hours for the year. If you are on a full-year sabbatical, you have no Staff-Development obligation for the year. If you are participating in the pre-retirement program, your Staff-Development obligation is based on the percent of a full-time load you are teaching for the year.

What if I don't complete my “Staff-Development” obligation?

If you cannot attend the mandatory on-campus day, it will be treated as a sick day or personal day—just as if you could not teach on that day. Failure to complete the Staff-Development obligation may result in a loss of pay.

How many hours of “Staff-Development” have I completed if I attended Flex Day activities August 23, 24, and 25?

  • Faculty who attended the activities on Wednesday August 23, 2006 can report a total of four hours of Staff-Development credit for the Learning Outcomes presentation (two hours) and Division Meetings focused on Learning Outcomes (two hours).
  • CR required attendance at convocation activities occurring on August 24 and 25, 2006.
    • Staff-Development credit can be accrued based on the time spent in:
      • All-College Assembly (two hours)
      • Student Data Indicators Training (one hour)
      • Sexual Health Literacy Project Training (one hour)
      • Division Meetings (hours vary by division)

Notes:

  • If CR did not have Staff-Development Days, we would have additional days of class.
  • Blank Staff Development Contract forms are available through a link from the CTE web page or in the Faculty Information folder in Outlook Public Folders.
