Course Descriptions for Mathematics

MATH-102 Elementary Algebra Review
(0.5 units lecture)
A review of Elementary Algebra concepts. Students will review evaluating, simplifying and solving many different kinds of expressions and equations. They will review graphing techniques and basic geometry. Students will use a variety of techniques to solve word problems. This class will help to prepare students for the Elementary Algebra Assessment Test, which is used to place students into MATH-120.
Note: Calculators will not be used.

MATH-103 Intermediate Algebra Review
(0.5 units lecture)
A review of Intermediate Algebra concepts. Students will review techniques for simplifying and solving expressions and equations that involve polynomial, rational, logarithmic and exponential expressions. This class will help to prepare students for the Intermediate Algebra Assessment Test, which is used to place students into MATH-5/15/21/22/25/30.
Note: Calculators will not be used.

MATH-105 Elementary Algebra
(4 units lecture)
A course which studies numbers and sets, first- degree equations and inequalities, absolute value, factoring, graphs, systems of equations, radicals, quadratic equations, and the quadratic formula.
Prerequisite: MATH-375/376
Note: Calculators will be used extensively.

MATH-106 Elementary Algebra
(5 units lecture/lab)
A study of the real number system, first degree equations and inequalities, polynomial expressions and equations, graphs of linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations, radicals, the quadratic formula, rational expressions and equations, interpretation of graphs, problem-solving techniques, similar triangles, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Small group work, exploratory activities, and computer use are involved in this course.
Prerequisite: MATH-375/376
Note: Graphing calculators are required (TI-83 Plus recommended).

MATH-110 A Survey of Geometry
(1 unit lecture)
A study of points, lines, angles, polygons, triangles, right triangles, congruent triangles, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, area, volume, similarity, circles, truth tables and Venn diagrams.
Prerequisite: MATH-105/106
Note: Calculators will be used extensively.

MATH-115 Math Confidence
(1 unit lecture)
A study of psychological and mathematical skills that will help students at various levels to successfully complete mathematics courses and courses in related areas.

MATH-120 Intermediate Algebra
(4 units lecture)
A course in which functions are investigated graphically, numerically, symbolically and verbally in real world settings. Linear, quadratic, absolute value, polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic equations and functions are explored, as well as systems of equations. Technology is integrated into all aspects of the course.
Prerequisite: MATH-105/106
Note: Graphing calculators are required (TI-83 Plus recommended).

MATH-15 Elementary Statistics
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
An emphasis in the use of statistical methods as applied to descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. While discussing descriptive statistics, the students learn to read, understand, and present data in a well organized way by use of frequency distribution, graphs, percentiles, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, correlations, and linear regression. While discussing inferential statistics, the students learn to make generalizations about a population based upon a sample using probability and its laws, and several parametric and non-parametric tests including t, chi-square, ANOVA, Wilcoxon Rank Sum, Kruskal-Wallis Test, Sign, and others. Computers will be used for statistical projects. Reading and writing skills at or above the ENGL-150 level are strongly recommended. A several page written term project will be assigned.

MATH-152 The Math Lab
(0.5 - 2 units lab)Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments
Facilitation for students enrolled in math classes needing individual assistance for specific mathematics problems.
Note: Units offered may vary by semester. Consult Schedule of Classes for section information.

MATH-21 Finite Math
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the methods of finite mathematics with an emphasis on systems of equations, matrices, linear programming, and the use of Markov chains in decision making.
Prerequisite: MATH-120
Note: Graphing calculators are required.

MATH-22 Business Calculus
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
An introduction to basic matrix operations and probability, and differential and integral calculus. This course also studies functions, limits, derivatives, integrals and their applications.
Prerequisite: MATH-120
Recommended: MATH-30

MATH-25 College Trigonometry
CSU(4 units lecture)
A study of trigonometric functions, cofunctions, solution of right triangles, use of a graphing calculator, solution of trigonometric identities, radian measure, circular functions, graphs of the trigonometric functions, double- and half-angle functions, conic sections oblique triangles, laws of sines and cosines, the inverse trigonometric functions, complex numbers in trigonometric form, and De Moivre’s Theorem.
Prerequisite: MATH-120

MATH-3 Fortran Programming
CSU and UC(3 units lecture/lab)
An introduction to the Fortran programming language with emphasis on programming for scientific, mathematical and engineering applications.
Recommended: MATH-25
Note: No prior experience with computers or programming is assumed.

MATH-30 College Algebra
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
A course covering first-degree and absolute value equations and inequalities; composite and inverse functions; polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions; systems of equations and inequalities; matrices; sequences and series; mathematical induction; binomial expansion theorem; and complex numbers.
Prerequisite: MATH-120
Note: Graphing calculators are required on the Eureka campus.

MATH-371 Arithmetic for the College Student
(3 units lecture)
A review of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Applications include ratio, proportion, and percent.

MATH-372 Arithmetic for the College Student
(4 units lecture)
A study of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, including the use of calculators. The arithmetic skills are used for applications of ratio, proportion and percent to business and consumer problems. Analysis of statistical data includes graphs, means, and medians. Introductory geometry topics include U.S. Customary Measurements, perimeter, and area. Problem solving, estimation, and the communication of mathematical ideas are an integral part of the course.

MATH-375 Pre-Algebra
(3 units lecture)
A review of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Applications include ratio, proportion, and percent. Also included are topics from geometry and an introduction to algebra.
Prerequisite: MATH-371/372
Note: Calculators will be used extensively.

MATH-376 Pre-Algebra
(4 units lecture)
A review of basic computation and estimation using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals with an emphasis on study skills and communication skills. Students will learn to compute with signed numbers, solve problems involving ratio, proportion, percent and geometry using a variety of techniques. Students will simplify expressions, solve equations, and graph linear equations. Small group work, exploratory activities and computers are involved in this course.
Prerequisite: MATH-371/372
Note: Calculators will be used extensively.

MATH-4 Matlab Programming
CSU(3 units lecture)
An introduction to programming in Matlab, with emphasis on programming for scientific, mathematical, and engineering applications.
Prerequisite: MATH-25 and MATH-30
Recommended: MATH-50A
Note: No prior experience with computers or programming is assumed.

MATH-45 Linear Algebra
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
A study of the use and application of matrices in the solution of systems of linear equations, determinants, vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors. Linear algebra is a core course in many engineering, physics, mathematics and computer science programs. Computers will be used extensively in this course.
Prerequisite: MATH-25 and MATH-30

MATH-5 Contemporary Mathematics
CSU(3 units lecture)
A study of mathematical concepts that include inductive and deductive reasoning, mathematical modeling and analysis of linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions, transformation of functions, geometric symmetries, sequences and series, dynamics of population growth, statistics, mathematics of finance, and problem solving techniques that include a variety of practical problems. This course is primarily designed for liberal art students.

MATH-50A Calculus I
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
A study of the derivatives and the integrals of algebraic, transcendental and trigonometric functions. Applications of the derivative include maximum and minimum problems, science applications and graphing of functions and derivative functions. A variety of integral applications will be studied. Writing to learn and group activities are used to develop communication skills in a technical environment.
Prerequisite: MATH-25 and MATH-30

MATH-50B Calculus II
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
A study of transcendental functions, their inverses, and the respective derivatives and integrals. Included are series and sequences, techniques of integration, and analytic geometry. Topics encompass applications of integration, indeterminate forms, improper integrals, convergent and divergent infinite series, power series, Taylor and MacLaurin series, and conic sections with analytical geometry.
Prerequisite: MATH-50A

MATH-50C Calculus III
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
A study of vectors in two and three dimensions, vector-valued functions, polar coordinate systems, derivatives and integrals of functions of more than one variable, and an introduction to vector fields. Topics include the vector product, spherical coordinate systems, partial derivatives, multiple integrals, LaGrange multipliers, and line integrals.
Prerequisite: MATH-50B
Note: Graphing calculators are required. Extensive computer visualization using Matlab is integrated in the course.

MATH-55 Differential Equations
CSU and UC(4 units lecture)
A study of differential equations and solutions, equations of first order and degree, linear differential equations, operational methods, systems of equations, existence theorems, series solutions, and applications.
