Course Objectives This course will introduce you to the many practical
and logistical considerations for a career as a fine artist. Covered
topics include an exploration of the varied fine arts professions,
portfolio preparation, writing skills development, artist's resources,
contemporary art movements, and exhibition preparation. This course
will give you a very detailed and comprehensive picture of how
to conduct yourself in the world as a practicing professional artist.
This is the kind of course I wish I'd taken in college!

Course Requirements and Grading : There will be 6+ full hours
per week of lectures, presentations, activities, field trips, demonstrations,
critiques, writing assignments, and intensive group discussion.
Your total involvement in each of these activities is absolutely
required. There will also be reading assignments for most class
sessions (listed in the class calendar), and each reading must
be completed before each corresponding lecture. In addition
to in-class work, you are also required to complete the following
activities and submit the following documents for your midterm
and final:
Participation in Fieldtrips, lectures, exhibit preparations, your
slide presentation (10%), and in group discussion activities: 40%
(of your total grade)
Midterm Packet: 30% including:
- Artist's Statement 10%
- Cover Letter 5%
- 5 labeled Slides 5%
- Resume 10%
Final Packet: 30% including:
- Exhibition Review 5%
- Sample Press Release 5%
- Final Exam 20%
Required Materials and Expenditures:
- The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist (Second
Edition) by Margaret Lazzari, Wadsworth Publishing (in the bookstore).
- Art 14 Course Reader (also purchased at the Campus
Bookstore).
- Film and Processing for a minimum of 5 slides, slide labels
and plastic slide sheet.
- Transportation to all fieldtrips.
