ENGL-10 Introduction to Classical Literature
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the study of great literature from antiquity through the Renaissance. Students will read and discuss a variety of representative works of poetry, fiction and drama, developing the necessary skills to approach literary masterpieces confidently.
Prerequisite: ENGL-1A

ENGL-150 College Reading and Writing
(3 units lecture)
A course in the development of college-level reading and writing skills. Written work progresses from brief essays to college-level essays based on critical reading. This course is not transferable to a four-year university.
Prerequisite: ENGL-350
Corequisite: ENGL-150L

ENGL-150L English Skills Practicum
(0.5 units lab)
Guided practice in the development of college-level reading and writing skills. Students receive individualized instruction in critical reading, in the conventions of standard written English, and in all stages of the writing process.Essential tutorial support and other resources for English 150 assignments are provided.

ENGL-152 The English Lab
(0.5 - 2 units lab)Repeatable to a maximum of four enrollments
The English Lab provides individual, personal instruction for students with specific writing problems. Instructors teach basic skills, organizational patterns and individual refinements of writing styles.

ENGL-153 ESL College Reading and Writing
(3 units lecture)
An advanced study for ESL students to gain confidence in college-level grammar, reading, and writing skills. Written work progresses from brief essays to college-level essays based on critical reading. The grammar segment emphasizes second language errors, which students learn to identify and correct. This course is not transferable to a four-year university.
Prerequisite: ENGL-350 or ENGL-353
Corequisite: ENGL-150L

ENGL-17 American Literature: Colonial - Civil War
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
Selected readings from the major writers of the United States from its colonial beginnings through the Civil War. Students will read critically and analytically in these works so as to understand their ideas and historical and cultural implications.
Recommended: ENGL-1A

ENGL-18 American Literature: Civil War - World War II
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
Selected readings from the major writers of the United States from post-Civil War through World War II. Students will read critically and analytically in these works to understand their ideas and historical and cultural implications.
Recommended: ENGL-1A

ENGL-1A College Composition
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
Transfer-level expository and argumentative writing with critical reading of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. A substantial research paper utilizing proper MLA documentation is required.
Prerequisite: ENGL 150

ENGL-1B Critical Inquiry and Literature
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
A course using literature as a basis for critical thinking and composition. Students analyze issues, problems, and situations represented in literature and develop effective short and long written arguments (6000 minimum word total) in support of an analysis. This course is designed for those students who seek to satisfy both the full year composition and the critical thinking transfer requirements.
Prerequisite: ENGL-1A

ENGL-20 Introduction to Non-Western Literature
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the literatures of Asia, Africa, and Latin America through the study of major works in their literary and cultural contexts. Selected readings are from both ancient and modern authors and include poetry as well as representative myths, epics, stories, and narratives.
Recommended: ENGL-1A

ENGL-22 Greek Mythology
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An examination of classical Greek mythology as stories whose ultimate meaning is psychological rather than concrete. The course examines the relationship of mythology, which expresses that which is most universally human within material that is often personal or historical in origin, with the archetypal patterns in literature.
Recommended: ENGL-1A

ENGL-28 Women in Literature
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
This course examines literature by and about women from the Middle Ages to the present, with an emphasis on contrasting mythical interpretations of what women are with what women themselves have written about their lives. Short stories, novels and poems are studied in terms of the literary elements used to reinforce the authors’ themes.

ENGL-32 Creative Writing: Poetry
CSU(3 units lecture)
This course involves analysis of literary models, poetry and practice in generating, writing and polishing poetry; includes student and teacher critiques.

ENGL-33 Creative Writing: Prose
CSU(3 units lecture)
This course involves analysis of literary models and prose writing (primarily short fiction); includes student and teacher critiques.

ENGL-350 Reading and Writing Skills
(5 units lecture/lab)
Basic written communication and reading skills, emphasizing the fundamentals of English grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, standard English usage, as well as reading comprehension at the literal, inferential, and critical levels. Written work with integrated readings from the paragraph to the short essay.
Prerequisite: GS-360 or Assessment for ENGL-350 ENGL-350L

ENGL-350L Reading and Writing Skills - Lab
(1 unit lab)
A review of basic written communication and reading skills.
Corequisite: ENGL-350

ENGL-353 ESL Reading and Writing Skills
(5 units lecture/lab)
A basic study in written communication and reading skills designed for second language students. Class instruction will emphasize the fundamentals of English grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, standard English usage, as well as reading comprehension. Written work progresses with integrated readings from the paragraph through the short essay and focuses on identifying and eliminating second language errors.
Prerequisite: GS-360 or Assessment for ENGL-353 ENGL-350L

ENGL-41 English Skills Tutoring
CSU(3 units lecture/lab)
Tutoring primarily basic skills students in English in the Writing Center while simultaneously acquiring (in the seminar portion) specific skills and techniques in tutoring. Students will learn how to question and to listen more effectively, how to evaluate, diagnose, and remediate writing problems, and how to assess which tutoring strategy is most appropriate for the individual learning situation.

ENGL-47 Introduction to Shakespeare
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to Shakespeare’s drama through the study of major works in their literary, intellectual, and social contexts. Readings will include poetry as well as six to eight representative comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances.
Recommended: ENGL-1A

ENGL-5 Word Origins and the English Language
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
This course is designed to increase vocabulary and language awareness. Increasing personal vocabulary will be approached etymologically; that is, through an understanding of the origins of words. A knowledge of Latin and Greek word elements will be emphasized. In addition, the English language will be studied: its history, nature and impact on the individual. Students will be asked to analyze the linguistic environment in which they live. How do words lead, mislead and empower?

ENGL-60 Introduction to British Literature: Beginnings Through the 18th Century
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to British literature from the middle ages through the eighteenth century. Students will explore the ideas and literary features of major works within their historical and cultural contexts.
Recommended: ENGL-1A

ENGL-61 Introduction to British Literature: Romanticism to the Present
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to British literature from the Romantic period to the present. Students will explore the ideas and literary features of major works within their historical and cultural contexts.
Recommended: ENGL-1A

ENGL-70 Student Magazine Production
CSU(2 units lecture/lab)Repeatable to a maximum of two enrollments
This class will produce a student literary magazine, in conjunction with a graphic design class. Students will solicit, select and edit material for publication and will market the magazine.

ENGL-8 Introduction to Contemporary Literature
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the study of great literature. Students will read and discuss a variety of representative works of poetry, fiction and drama from 1945 - present and develop skills necessary to approach literary masterpieces confidently.
Prerequisite: ENGL-1A

ENGL-9 Introduction to Modern Literature
CSU and UC(3 units lecture)
An introduction to the study of great literature from the Enlightenment through the early 20th century. Students will read and discuss a variety of representative works of poetry, fiction and drama, developing the necessary skills to approach literary masterpieces confidently.
Prerequisite: ENGL-1A
