Note:
Don't forget to mark you calendars for Friday, May 2 for Poets & Writers' Reading in Forum 100.  This will start at 6:00 pm for refreshments; the reading will begin at 6:30 pm.  The booklets cost $3.00, which I highly recommend; also, bring some money for refreshments.  For more information about Poets & Writers, see our website.  Come support your peers (editors): Chris Knight, Patricia MacDonald, Roy Marin, and Phillip Neel.  Remember, you can use this event as extra credit, too.

Remember, all you have to do is go, take notes, get a program of ticket stub, and write a one-page journal (double-spaced) that is your review of the event.  The journal is due at the next class session.  The extra credit is worth 20 pts., but you can only do one extra credit for the semester.

Gentle reminder: If you haven't yet paid for the first packet, remember to bring the $3.25 to reimburse Dave.  The second packet costs $3.40 each.  If you owe for both, that's a total of $6.65.

4/18

Class 11

1) Syllabus calendar and announcements
    2) Dave will read a couple things from last week's stack
    3) Discuss Bird by Bird reading (pp. 110-130)
4) Discuss "The Cloak"
5) View The Hero's Journey and share reading by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.
6) Dave will hand out the packet of stories, as well as return the other stories with comments.  Don't forget to bring the required amount (see above) for next week.
7) Small groups will discuss those stories 2 that weren't chosen for the packet.
    8) If time permits, Dave may read a story he's recently written.

Homework 1) If you story 2 wasn't chosen for the packet, revise the story (based on feedback from your group and from Dave).  Make sure when you turn it in to include the first draft, Dave's comment, and the revision (on top).
2) Read Bird by Bird pp. 133-161 and mark up for discussion next week.  Bring the book to class.
    3) Read "My Mother" by Jamaica Kincaid, mark it up, and see if you can make sense of it, using Joseph Campbell's paradigm of the hero's journey.  Also write a synopsis.
4) Start to think what you'd like included in the class packet.  Dave will be collecting a polished piece of work (5-20 pages) from each of you (worth 100 pts.).  This will be due at class 13 (in two weeks).  Please note that you should not email this story in.  You need to submit a paper copy, with your name on it, the pages numbered, and as clean as possible.  (Don't staple it: use a paper clip, as Dave will be making a packet out of all the stories.)  You must have this in on time because it will be submitted to Printing Services that day.  This is one deadline you can't miss.

Note:   The above assignments and deadlines are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances.
