, 8pm. Jared Paul a national acclaimed slam poet will be here on the north coast sharing his talents with us at the Accident Galleryin Old Town.  210 C St. The show is fundraiser for the Humboldt Adult Nation Slam Team. There will be music by Brian Swizlo, live art by Mackenzie Green Powell. Other poets include, Mischief Mic, Vanessa Pike, Isaac Miller (from San Fran), Brad Wilson and Therese Keslin.

Note: Don't forget to mark you calendars for Friday, May 2 for Poets & Writers' Reading in Forum 100.  This will start at 6:00 pm for refreshments; the reading will begin at 6:30 pm.  The booklets cost $3.00, which I highly recommend; also, bring some money for refreshments.  For more information about Poets & Writers, see our website.  Come support your peers (editors): Chris Knight, Patricia MacDonald, Roy Marin, and Phillip Neel.  Remember, you can use this event as extra credit, too.

Remember, all you have to do is go, take notes, get a program of ticket stub, and write a one-page journal (double-spaced) that is your review of the event.  The journal is due at the next class session.  The extra credit is worth 20 pts., but you can only do one extra credit for the semester.

Gentle reminder: If you haven't yet paid for the first packet, remember to bring the $3.25 to reimburse Dave.  The second packet costs $3.40 each.  If you owe for both, that's a total of $6.65.

4/25

Class 12

1) Go over syllabus calendar
    2) Announcements
    3) Discuss Bird by Bird pp. 133-161.
    4) Discuss "My Mother"
    5) Quickwrite: describe one area in which your writing has improved and how you're using that technique
6) Discuss the story packet #2 with stories by Phillip Neel, Roy Marin, Mary Lou Willits, Elysia Willis
7) Hand out your comments to folks for the other stories #2 that weren't chosen for the packet in small groups.
    8) Dave will hand back graded work; he'll also collect synopses, exercises, and story revisions.

Homework 1) Everyone finishes his/her revisions of story one and story two within the next two weeks. Do be sure (when you turn it in) to include the earlier draft and comments: I want to see both what the earlier draft looked like, as well as what I said in my comment to you.  Also, I want to see a substantive revision from everyone.  If the second draft doesn't show signs of much revision, I'll return it to you to do again.
2) Read Bird by Bird pp. 162-194 and mark up for discussion next week.  Bring the book to class.
3) Finish your polished piece for next week, and make sure that you're ready to turn it in at class (not in my box afterwards during the day). Dave will be collecting a polished piece of work (5-20 pages) from each of you (worth 100 pts.).  Don't use page numbers for this draft and don't staple it together (use a paperclip!).  This will be due at class 13, and you cannot be late.  Please note that you should not email this story in.  You need to submit a paper copy, with your name on it, and make it as clean as possible.  You must have this in on time because it will be submitted to Printing Services that day.  This is one deadline you can't miss.  (100 pts.)
4) Read "A Jury of Her Peers" in the booklet, p. 47 and come prepared to discuss it.

Note:   The above assignments and deadlines are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances.
